Hi,

I'm a Electrical Engineering PhD. candidate and I'm looking for a non-gamer-aesthetic, small-form-factor computer. I use Gentoo Linux/NetBSD for programming. (I occasionally use Windows 10 engineering software but I have a seperate ThinkPad for that). I'm looking for component advice. I'm not sure what chipset preforms the best with Unix-based operating systems. Information on it is quite sparse; this is why I'm asking you for help.

English is my third language--I apologize for any mistakes.

If you don't need a graphics card, then Intel based is probably the way to go. I have not had an issue with running Intel based systems with integrated gpu and or nvidia graphics(some versions of nvidias drivers can be buggy but built-in or rollbacks are available). AMD linux support for graphics has not been as strong, have seen reports that recent AMD APUs are problematic for that reason. Pretty much any intel NUC type system should work well if you want go real small.
