While it isn't a perfect example, I had this discussion a while back about the 3060's 12GB being a gimmick, but now it looks like it was a decent investment. Take a look at HUB's STALKER 2 GPU benchmarks the 12GB 3060 regularly outstrips newer/faster GPUS with 8GB VRAM.

I get the argument that, at the likely performance level of the A2000, you'll hit the sheer GPU grunt limit long before you fill the frame buffer (although I did make that very same argument about the 3060). However, if I was in the market for a used A2000, I'd definitely be looking for a good deal on the 12GB model.

My understanding was for the A2000 specifically- the 6GB version typically performed marginally better in gaming scenarios. I wonder if maybe the larger chips used a fraction more power which left a tiny bit less for the GPU chip??

That may change with some of the newer games but you’ll likely hit the limits of the chipset’s performance before the 6GB becomes the main concern.

For CAD obviously more VRAM the more betterer.

::EDIT:: hadn’t seen Arboreal or Revo’s posts oops- interesting if the 12G 3060 is better than “faster” 8GB cards! Will have to check that out

for Gaming, 6GB is enough IMHO for a 1080p GPU

for other workloads it might be another story (I got the 12G for CAD)
I got and use yours 6GB A2000 also mostly for CAD, and seems to be fine for majority of workloads I am doing :)
Mostly working with PTC Creo here, almost daily at this point.

The VRAM question is more focused on the trend that seems to be happening in recent games, like ;

Although this example is pretty extreme (read: terrible), I have seen other games that just don't flow all that well with less than 8GB anymore.
At the same time I have a feeling that some cards seem to be crippled this way.

For example it also reminds me how much worse the 6GB RTX3050 performs compared to the 8GB.
In this case the 8GB uses quite a bit more power.
But just from a price perspective they costs basically the same.

OK, I checked with Huitong... the 4060m sold by them has another VBIOS and is locked at 70W TDP so that it does not need the additional power connector - but it also only scores around 7500 Timespy GPU points, which is 2000 points lower than the prototype I tested with 90W TDP

I assume they will select GPUs based on silicon lottery and use the "better" chips for the 70W TDP version, so people can put the card in the Minisforum MS-01 and Thinkstation.

will you know for such power limit card, can the usual undervoltage and OC via MSI Afterburner still work?

will such tinkering cause the 70w limit to be removed accidentally and render the card useless as PCIE can't support the original watts and there not power 6/8pins connector to add in additional power.

be cool if we can squeeze out further performance by OC/UV the 70watt card further.

you can set a custom V/F curve in afterburner but not change the voltages

in other words: within the power limits (e.g. 70W) you can play around with higher / lower frequencies but don't expect too much from overclocking
