I was thinking of doing something similar before money issues stopped me.
I'll post my .skp stuff tomorrow if you want, it might be helpful.

yes please

maybe have something where the backing is 3D printed with a slotted area where the controller fits inside snug. with ports facing down. (not through the side.) using the Apple OEM glass for a cover.

^ this including a hinged 3D printed. BUT 2 screens could probably fold easily but 3 screens, 1 screen would need a longer hinge to fold correctly with the 2 others.

basically you work and game on 2 screens and 1 screen for movies / youtube / discord

Even at getting a locked ipad for $50, buying 3 of them and 3 control boards seems like a super expensive DIY project. Over $200 in parts, plus the time to put it all together and be functional. At least it'll make a cool story!

Oh right if I understand this correctly, the one with the mini DP connector works for iPad Air displays (serials with QX2). the one that supports QX1 displays are for other iPad displays. gotta check the model number on the display itself.

EDIT: LOL love the last two paragraphs of the shipping info page

EDITx2: Wording:

  • iPad Retina 1536x2048 9.7" (QX2) LCD to Mini DisplayPort Adapter
    • This one only works for iPad Air 1. Only comes in miniDP
  • 2048x1536 LCD to DisplayPort Adapter
    • This one works with iPad 3 or 4. Comes in full-size Displayport and miniDP variants.

As some already noted, https://www.packedpixels.com/ sells them ready made.

Two can be placed on the sides of your laptop screen and vertically it fits a 13.3" or 14" screen well.

You can get Displayport 1.2 to dual (or triple but what for?) MST hubs and drive both from a single DP output on your laptop.

or triple but what for?
With three screens, the centre of the 'virtual' screen will lie in the centre of a monitor. If using two screens, the centre will be at the join between two screens. Not too much of a problem for pure productivity, but for gaming it's a dealbreaker.

The third screen is the laptop screen. One Packed Pixels monitor on each side, each requires a DisplayPort output. That's only two. You don't need a DP-to-three-DP MST hub.

Most people here are using SFF portable desktop machines, not laptops, so three screens are needed for a portable triple-screen setup.

ill most likely be using the setup with an S4 Mini.

Im just testing what i can and cant do with my macbook pro but I can see myself using 3 with that as well.

the only be problem I have is that reading on these are kinda hard (I havent found and option on Sierra that will let me scale the font)

Wait, the mini display port one won't work with the iPad 3? Because that's the one I had ordered...

Okay sorry, wording on my part O_O The board for QX1 has an option for miniDP. As long as you bought the one that says QX1 in the display board compatibility part you're fine.

2048x1536 LCD to DisplayPort Adapter
- LG LP097QX1-SPC1/2/3/ any other suffix most likely
- LG LP097QX1-SPA1/2/V
- Samsung LTL097QL01-W01
- Most likely any 9.7" panel with 51-pin 0.3mm pitch connector

iPad Retina 1536x2048 9.7" (QX2) LCD to Mini DisplayPort Adapter:
- Panels for iPad Air (I think 1st generation)
- LG LP097QX2-(SP)(AV)

Keep in mind how wide the bezels are on the iPad if you're planning to use 3 side by side with the stock shell/ glass.
