I wonder if the new 300W AC-DC box would fit in the S4 with a 1060 mini, or maybe even that Zotac 1080 mini.
seems like it might be too big
It can, check out Josh's ne thread on the 300W HDPLEX. https://smallformfactor.net/forum/threads/hdplex-300-and-my-new-riser.1335/
The 1080 mini can't fit in the S4 to begin with...

I'd love if someone could squeeze a 1060 in with the 300 ac-dc though
It should fit, the card is only 213mm and theres 203mm of room before you hit the back of the aluminum wrap-around bezel, I'm gonna dremel off 10mm of the aluminum fins and it'll fit just fine, with the bezel intact! :D

If you have to mod it, then it doesn't fit... The modded card might fit, but you can't say the 1080 mini fits.

I don't see any pics of the 300w ac-dc in the S4 in that thread. It seems to be about the 300w dc-atx, which is no surprise that it fits.

Ah i see what you mean, my bad I confused the 300W DC-ATX with the 300W AC-DC. It might fit with a 1060 mini or maybe even a 1070 mini from gigabyte, but it would probably require the measuring of the empty space left by these cards along the same size where the HDPLEX would mount.

About the 213mm 1080mini, -10mm is like 1/3 of an inch, thats not bad at all. The PCB in 6.7 inches which is within the Mini-ITX spec, it's just the heatsink/fan/aluminum fins and shroud that extend past the PCB that are the problem. Carefully cutting 10mm off that cooling solution wont hurt performance noticeably IMO. Therefore, I'd say it can fit the S4-mini with the wrap-around bezel OFF, but it will only fit "with some mods" if you want the wrap around bezel ON (which I do). :)

I've tried this and the only cards you're getting into the S4 Mini with an internal AC-DC are the short Zotac and EVGA 150mm 1050ti models as well as the 750ti/950/1050/1050ti low profile offerings from Galax and Gigabyte. I have the EVGA SC 1060 and it's not even close.

That's a shame, glad to hear your experience and stuff.
not having the case in hand makes it hard to guestimate, I just remember seeing a build with a GPU and AC-DC in it at some point!

Good news is that Josh shipped mine earlier today!

To be honest with you I THINK I remember seeing a "Low profile" GPU being used in the SFF builds section where there was that one "brickless" S4 mini. found it here, look at the set of pictures in that post.

Also, nice @Curiosity, i'm hyped for your S4 to arrive, please make sure to keep us posted with an S4 build thread here on the forums! :)

By measurement the R9 Nano will definitely work. I think the downside is that it creates a ton of heat and power spikes like crazy. While Larry has engineered the 300W to handle spikes better than previous models, I'd be wary to do an R9 Nano build unless you want to blow the AC-DC up. That being said, there is reason to believe (from what I've heard) that we may be seeing a successor to the Nano in the Vega lineup. If that is the case, I would certainly be keen to do a build with that card as the efficiency will likely be leaps and bounds ahead of the R9.

That's definitely the thread I remember seeing, too bad it won't work with bigger GPUs :c

I'll do my best, but as of right now I'm not prepared to move in, unfortunately.
I can move into the A4-SFX with ease, but need to replace my GPU and get an HDPLEX before I can build into the S4.
I'll definitely take pictures when I get it and post a build thread once I start building though.

R9 nano issue is mainly current peak (around 500w). Unfortunately the weakest link is not dc-dc but ac-dc adapter that could not manage the peak.

I used an sfx psu as replacement in my s4 mini, then i moved all my setup inside define nano s in order better cool r9 nano.

To be honest, do not go above 150w tdp gpu in s4 mini...and even gtx 1070mini is noisy inside it..;) evag sc gtx 1060 is not ok for your need?

For the life of me I am racking my brain trying to figure out if and how I can make the HDPlex ATX Adapter Bracket fit my SFX PSU sized Silverstone ML06B-E case... thus allowing me to replace my Silverstone ST30SF SFX PSU with the shortly arriving HDPLEX 160W DC-ATX Direct-Plug with the HDPLEX 160W AC-DC w/PFC (or even the HDPLEX 80W AC-DC). This would eliminate quite a bit of cabling and gain me some extra room for both improved cable management and an extra 2.5" SSD.

He says that all black wires for the soldered ones are too prone to errors during manufacturing and he doesn't plan to change it.

At least it is only eleven (11) short wires to custom sleeve... four (4) for the DC-IN power and seven (7) for the accessory strand.

Use some "LCD" branded double sided PET tape (High Bond) to tape the back of the AC-DC to a flat surface inside the case? Josh from NFC has used that in his builds before and it is VERY High Bond, so it's not liable to come off. :)

Yep, planning to do that exactly (for the AC-DC and the two (2) 2.5" SSDs but I still need to figure out a bracket/plate to cover/fill the SFX PSU hole, as well as hold the AC input module...
