I was originally thinking something like a modified Abarth 205 A (AKA Vignale Berlinetta) with the air intake and tail located fuel tank but it's obviously not actually that :(

I've been through the list of approved Mille Miglia vehicles... Wiki sportscars list... 50s European sports car spotters guides...Nothing jumping out at me..

Was it a production vehicle? Would the language-spoken in the country of origin give it away?

Ok so it's..

- European brand (but not British)
- Probably built 1950-1957 (1000 Miglia ran until 1957, and modern version is only open to cars from that era)
- RHD
- Had a production and a race variant (which is what's pictured)

I think I've solved it...

By following the rabbit hole of 1000 Miglia cars and the prolific sight of Alfa Romeos (but it's NOT an Alfa Romeo) I then pulled on a couple of threads about Enzo Ferrari getting fired from Alfa Romeo, and a particular engineer that seems to have pissed him off at some point (and on whom he lays some blame for the loss of his job) called Wifredo Ricart. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wifredo_Ricart

And given Ferrari's big ol' sook about the "Spanish lorry manufacturer was building cars fit to rival his" you read on to discover Pegaso. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pegaso
Who made..the Z-102.
Not a brilliant name, but looks otherwise pretty spectacular

And I think possibly even THE car from your photo!

You said Commonwealth, so I guessed Goggomobile - but it didn't match up. Didn't realise how close I was!
