The stock Intel back plates are pretty flimsy and can bend during ILM loading. The Beefcake back plate is much more rigid and keeps the CPU from deflecting during ILM loading. It is not required but can help prevent bent processors as well as makes it easier to mount your CPU thermal solution. The sheet metal back plate is for thermal solution retention only.
Welp, pulled the trigger, let's see how this goes. Definitely a better engineered solution than EK's.

And the cold plate isn't nickel coated fwiw. I don't think it matters even with liquid metal "staining" but if anyone cares it's good ol fashioned copper red. I'm using
I'm assuming that the beefcake backplate can be reused for LGA1851, and that another cold plate could be added for any further die changes.

Another difference with the acetal, the brass block is an excellent doorstop.
