Hey all!

I've done a bit of searching on Flex ATX PSU's and I haven't really found anything all that helpful, So, I come to you knowledgeable wizards of the SFF forum ;)

I'm starting to throw together some ideas for a SFF build similar to the Hutzy build. I've already dabbled with a HDPlex 160w and 250w. I had my power brick go up in smoke, So for the time being I'm focusing on Flex ATX as my preference for my psu.

A 6700K and 1070 puts me at approximately 270w (according to OuterVision), Although I may hold out to see what Ryzen brings. With that in mind, What 300W~ Flex ATX PSU's are out there? Ideally I'd want a 300W, Platinum rated, Modular PSU. Does such a thing exist?

I'll update with what I find as I dive deeper into the Interwebs! Thanks for the read, Looking forward to what you have to say.

Edit:

This may be what I'm looking for, With a little modding?

Jup, the SSP300-SUG is the only PSU of this kind, but only Gold rated. There are two other modular Flex PSUs by Seasonic but they are very long.

This is the pinout I had drawn from the cable that comes with the PSU:

I actually stumbled upon that thread elsewhere :)

It's a shame that, That is all that's offered in our era of SFF :/

After reading about the horrible fan noise, I'm slightly deterred from it.

@iFreilicht, Did you ever swap the fan with a noctua one? Was the noise that bad?

There is no such thing as a quiet 40mm fan unfortunately : /

You can also look at moving to an SFX PSU. The Corsair SF-450 is super quiet, however it isn't the same dimensions as a FlexATX unit, obviously.

What power supply brick were you using that burned up?

I thought so :(

I already have a SFX PSU in my current rig. They're small but I dislike the height of it.

I had a 230w original dell power brick. Had it pegged at 150w-160w. It went up in smoke, I didn't even have it under load at the time.

Yes it was. Sounded like a small hairdryer, nothing you could solve by just wearing headphones. The fan in that PSU is the 10,000RPM version and I'm pretty sure it goes up to those speeds. Swapping it with the noctua one would risk overheating. At the very least, the maximum continuous power output would be lowered significantly.

In idle, I can't hear the fan on my FSP500 over ambient, but yeah, no 40mm fan can be good enough to move 13CFM inaudibly.

I guess I'll hold off until Ryzen!

I'm assuming the FSP500 can be modified to have a 6+2 pcie?

Thanking you very much.

I am however stepping away from this form factor as I have something glorious in the pipeline ;)

No probs :)

For anyone reading this looking for flex/1u info, avoid (like the plague) anything from Seasonic that has H1U in the model number. I have an SS400-H1U, dual exhaust fans and despite claiming thermal speed control, they run at full blast from the get go. VERY noisy. The L1U's are more consumer oriented and should be much quieter. I also have an FSP250-50GUB which I stuck a Noctua fan in and it's very quiet.
