News ASRock Unveils the X299E-ITX/ac: Mini ITX + X299 + Quad-channel Memory

Mod edit:

Detailed overview of what we know about the X299E-ITX/ac thus far here: https://smallformfactor.net/news/asrock-x299e-itxac-little-monster-detailed

Original:

ASRock did it! Finally, there's an Intel HEDT platform motherboard with full quad-channel DDR4 memory. The new X299E-ITX/ac is for those who need up to 18 CPU cores and up to 64 GB of quad-channel DDR4 memory in their SFF machines for reasons. The board manages its limited PCB real-estate by going vertical. It features two riser cards, one with a few onboard controllers, and a pair of 32 Gb/s M.2 slots), and the other riser with SATA 6 Gb/s ports, a third M.2 slot, and the headers such as USB 3.1. The board draws power from 24-pin ATX and 8-pin EPS connectors, conditioning it for the LGA2066 CPU using a 7-phase VRM. The lone expansion slot is a PCI-Express 3.0 x16, memory is handled by four DDR4 SO-DIMM slots. Connectivity includes two Intel I219-V driven gigabit Ethernet interfaces, 802.11ac WLAN, and Bluetooth 4.1.

Hey, don't badmouth my X99E-ITX/ac. ;) I think if we're judging purely on looks it beats its successor.

Are there any visible differences between the pre-production model and what's shown on Newegg that you guy can see?
Comparing Newegg's top-down shot to SFFN's top-down shot of the prototype, we appear to have:
- Gained a BIOS A/B switch (just above the PCIe slot power lanes)
- RGB header has migrated from where the A/B switch now is to the top-right edge
- The six-pin jumper cluster in the top-right is now gone (could have been replaced by the A/B switch maybe?)
- The power delivery heatsink has gained some extra gooves, and now extends right to the edge of the board to overhang the caps (seen better in the side shot: Newegg | prototype) which should improve cooling
- Some minor silkscreen changes and surface component additions

If you can wait, there is 3466Mhz SO-DIMM ram coming from G.SKILL, but if your workload doesnt require high speed ram, but there is 3000Mhz 16GB kit from Corsair, so you wont notice much difference compared to 3466Mhz.

Don't think it will be that bad. Got a Razor cube, did a little grinding and put a 280 rad in front with couple of Noctua 2000 fans. Run that thru cpu then thru 120 with another Noctua on back end then it's going up to Titan Xp. Probably put couple of thin 15 fans on back side blowing on back of motherboard and 2 960 pro nvme sticks. Got a aquaero 6 lt on back to play with.

I'll always buy intel. Im not a brand fanboy, just a fan of quality products. Thats why I always buy Nvidia and Intel... that said, I will not be buying the i9 7900X. Its thermals are out of control not because it runs hot with power but because intel decided to screw people under the lid.

As for this ITX beauty, I was stoked too, until I saw how close coffee lake and a respective AsRock ITX board for it is to launch (Oct 8th & 5th). Now if only AMD didnt suck we would have a hot new volta card too!

Competition in the market place is good, as long as it poses a threat to it's competitor; otherwise, it's not competition at all.

Built my last pc 15 years ago and it was the same old ford vs chevy deal going on then between intel and amd. I've just always ended up with intel even tho they know how to squeeze every dollar out of you. I've always had the feeling they held back their technology. Intel will always be the big dog!

Can't wait to find out what it looks like though! Customer is sending me i9 7920X and we will see just how much cooler you need for the MINI. XD
Oh wow interesting. Is it something you get to figure out, or did the buyer have something in mind already? o_o
Also do they want it still contained in the case? (i.e. no hot rodding)

Temps of 7920X may be A LOT better as it has bigger die than 7900X and the same 140W TDP.

Btw are you going to post a build log or just post pictures with temp results?

For a long while I've been thinking to myself "what is even the point of Kaby Lake X?" and then I remember that this existed. I cannot wait to see tiny builds with this board.
