It's time to build again, after long years with no working computer. I've just order a Formd T1 v2.1 in silver with CNC anodized side panels. This will be a Linux workstation, aimed primarily at game development, 3D rendering and digital painting ... with gaming as a side activity 😄

I have to buy eveything, but here is what I have in mind, please feel free to comment or give any advise :
  • Case : Formd T1 v2.1 (ordered)
  • Motherboard : Asus B850-I
  • CPU : AMD Ryzen 7 9700X
  • Heatsink : Thermalright AXP90-X47 full copper
  • RAM : G.Skill Trident Z5 64GB 6000M CL30 (Black, no RGB)
  • Storage : Western Digital SN850X 2TB
  • PSU : Silverstone Extreme 850R (Cybernetics Platinum)
  • Case fans : Phanteks T30 (x2 exhaust)
  • GPU : Gigabyte RTX 4070 Ti Super AI TOP (the 2 slots blower style one)
I'm not 100% sold on the GPU yet, especially with RTX 5000 series around the corner, but I like the idea of the blower to prevent warm air recirculation. I'm also considering the AXP90-X53 Full copper and the AXP120-X67 as potential heatsinks, depending on the GPU thickness.

Monitor wise, I have this 2 ones on my short list as I want a built in KVM for work-from-home purpose to plug my laptop with a single cable :
  • Eizo EV3240X
  • BenQ RD280UA
Why the Ryzen 7 9700X ? Because of efficiency mostly, it gives 7700X level of performance but with 60% of its power draw. Been considering the Ryzen 9 7900 too, as it is the exact same price and has a 65 TDP too, but 9000 series has a better memory controller.

Good luck with your build. I recently transferred my build to the T1 v2.5 mainly due to price and availability over the v2.1. I have heard the v2.1 is of better quality and if that is true it will be truly amazing because my case is really nice.

I think solid choice overall. I did not know you develop games. What kind of? Does game development favor certain GPU brand over other brands?

Thank you mate ! I wanted to support the OG designer, so I jumped on the 2.1 as soon as the combo I wanted was in stock.

I majored in real-time 3D rendering in the early 2000 and started my developper carreer as a game developper in a small studio in Paris, making small arcade games mostly. Left the gaming industry when I wanted a more stable job and needed a higher income.

I kept doing small games on the small time my kids left me, but I especially like writing rendering engines.

I have a thread on the forum that I started before I burnt out and I wanna go back to it, as I really think it´s worth it. Also planning to join as many gamejams as I can to challenge my imagination and deliver something on a regular basis.

We should know how the new RTX 50 series are looking by the end of the month. Current rumors don't look that promising though: A 15-20% uplift in rasterization performance and Nvidia pushing DLSS 4 multiframe generation as the big performance boost.

The RTX 4070 Ti Super may end up as a great choice if prices drop to clear out the old models.

I'm interested in the new Radeon RX 9070 XT, but I think with your focus on rendering over gaming an NVIDIA card with CUDA is likely your best bet.
