It's time to build again, after long years with no working computer. I've just order a Formd T1 v2.1 in silver with CNC anodized side panels. This will be a Linux workstation, aimed primarily at game development, 3D rendering and digital painting ... with gaming as a side activity 😄

I have to buy eveything, but here is what I have in mind, please feel free to comment or give any advise :
  • Case : Formd T1 v2.1
  • Motherboard : Asus B850-I
  • CPU : AMD Ryzen 7 9700X
  • Heatsink : Thermalright AXP90-X47 full copper
  • RAM : Kingston Fury Beast 64GB 6000M CL30-36-36-76 (SK Hynix A-die)
  • Storage : Kingston KC3000 2TB
  • PSU : Silverstone Extreme 850R (Cybernetics Platinum)
  • Case fans : Noctua NF-F12 iPPC 3000 PWM (x2 exhaust)
  • GPU : Sapphire RX 7800 XT 16GB "founders edition"
Monitor wise, I have this 3 ones on my short list as I want a built in KVM for work-from-home purpose to plug my laptop with a single cable :
  • Eizo EV3240X
  • BenQ RD280UA
  • Viewsonic VP2776T-4K

Good luck with your build. I recently transferred my build to the T1 v2.5 mainly due to price and availability over the v2.1. I have heard the v2.1 is of better quality and if that is true it will be truly amazing because my case is really nice.

I think solid choice overall. I did not know you develop games. What kind of? Does game development favor certain GPU brand over other brands?

Thank you mate ! I wanted to support the OG designer, so I jumped on the 2.1 as soon as the combo I wanted was in stock.

I majored in real-time 3D rendering in the early 2000 and started my developper carreer as a game developper in a small studio in Paris, making small arcade games mostly. Left the gaming industry when I wanted a more stable job and needed a higher income.

I kept doing small games on the small time my kids left me, but I especially like writing rendering engines.

I have a thread on the forum that I started before I burnt out and I wanna go back to it, as I really think it´s worth it. Also planning to join as many gamejams as I can to challenge my imagination and deliver something on a regular basis.

Interesting. Keep us updated :)

We should know how the new RTX 50 series are looking by the end of the month. Current rumors don't look that promising though: A 15-20% uplift in rasterization performance and Nvidia pushing DLSS 4 multiframe generation as the big performance boost.

The RTX 4070 Ti Super may end up as a great choice if prices drop to clear out the old models.

I'm interested in the new Radeon RX 9070 XT, but I think with your focus on rendering over gaming an NVIDIA card with CUDA is likely your best bet.

Little update: Ordered everything but the GPU as availability is a mess and prices are all over the place for upper tier GPU since RTX50 release. Will go with Radeon 9000 in the end, as I'm kinda afraid of that 12VHPWR still burning GPU 😄

Did some small adjustements to my listing when ordering :
  • RAM : Kingston 64GB 6000MT CL30-36-36-76 (SK Hynix A-die)
  • SSD : Kingston KC3000 2TB
  • FAN : 2x Noctua NF-F12 iPPC 3000 PWM
Went for better RAM with tighter timings and picked an m.2 with high endurance rating. Phanteks T30 being out-of-stock, I went with iPPC fans from Noctua (high air flow and great PWM range, won't have to run them too fast too).

I also picked official Silverstone ultra-flexible silicon cables for the EX850R as it will make my life easier 🤭.

All that's left to get is the GPU ... stay tuned.

Will post more later when I have the time to take proper pictures, but the build is now assembled and working. Went with a Sapphire made Radeon 7800 XT (reference design).

I'm super glad that I bought the extra silicon cables for the Silverstone EX850R as the stock ones are real stiff. Also, don't make the same mistake as I did and use the short screws to mount the AXP90-X47 as the long one interferes with the GPU backplate in the T1 😅
