I wish this was intentional! My custom case is waaaaaay too overspecialized for watercooling, and not be able to use it for aircooling is the result

The GPUs are “more recent”, suddenly.
Originally there were x2 Gainward 6600 GT Golden Sample in SLI
(I remember that I’ve fucked up the 6800 Ultra to replace the cooler, then I decided to stay “only” with the two 6600 GT)

seems to be... a lane switch? not sure, but it has a physical passive PCB key to enable SLI on the board

Exactly. Is the first attempt from Nvidia to the SLI. Basically activating the “DUAL SLOT” you can put in SLI two identical GPUs.
Keeping it in SINGLE slot as I do know allows to have multiple different GPUs.
That was terrific at that time!
X2 6600gt where cheaper that a single 6800 Ultra and the performance was on par!

So, what, the latter 8 PCIe lanes on the first x16 slot are routed through this small AIC and then either to the first or second slot depending on which way the thingy is inserted? That is insane. I mean, that would add significant latency to half the PCIe signalling to the first slot. I can't imagine that not causing BSODs left, right and center.
