So tempted to pick up one of these but so over-priced.

Local Micro Center has one of these as comparison for $50 less:

A smidge faster than an RX 580 . . .

The 5500xt is in a tough spot. It really has to top out around 150-160 USD brand new to be remotely interesting. Even then I would still go with a used 570/580 for under $100. If it has to be an itx card AND Radeon then go for OEM 580s used or even the Sapphire 570 which is around $120 new these days. Leaving a small amount of performance on the table maybe but saving a chunk of change vs the 5500xt.

I do understand the power savings argument vs Polaris but for the current price? Not so sure. I would under-volt if that was an issue.

The 1650 super is a better card for the money at $160 than the 5500xt 8Gb IMO --even with less vram.
for example: https://www.newegg.com/msi-geforce-...aero-itx-oc/p/N82E16814137486?&quicklink=true

A nugget from the Techspot review:

"On average the 5500 XT was slower than the RX 590 and only ~3.5% faster than the RX 580.."

RX 590 require more power. More then 200. 5500 it is only 130.
So, you can setup gaming 1080p machine with passive 200 watt PSU.

Agree that if you have a power budget of 200w — that pushes the decision to newer or a lower power GPU. From a cost standpoint alone the Rx 5500 is still too high for what it brings IMO. Obviously in the SFF world we spend more to get into a lower volume all the time.

I bought one and returned it because of this: https://www.tomshardware.com/news/amd-rx-5500-xt-vram-pcie-4

I figured this is what explains the discrepancies in performance metrics between reviews (some show it's well ahead of rx 580/590, some show it's equal/slightly slower)

Basically, it's only worth it if you have a board that supports PCIe 4.0 (X570 boards edit: some b450 boards and x470s but it depends)

There's more on the topic if you googly a bit, I suggest doing so if you're considering buying this card

B450/470 has no pci 4.0. It is only with some beta bios's. But in last bios's is no more.
Most reviews done on Intel platforms, not and x570.

With pci 3.0 it is close to 580. With x570 board or future b550 it will be faster.

I see few 5500XT for under $150 currently. Wonder if I should take that over OEM RX580 (That' I don't have too). Seems like price and performance is about the same, but newer card is more efficient and comes with warranty.
It's a pass for $200+ but at $150... what do you think?
