Will a 25mm thick fan fit if you take the stock noctua fan off and are the temps better that way instead of the normal way

Yes and no. Yes, there is enough space above the NH-L9i to put a 25mm thick fan--there is actually 30mm with the fan removed. But it would have to be the same size as the Noctua as you could not fit a 120 because of the RAM or the I/O. Even if you could, I'm very sure that a 120mm fan would be awful because you need fairly high static pressure in order for this heatsink to work.

If you were to replace the included fan with a 25x80, it could work and improve temperatures, but keep in mind fans need to have space above them free to work efficiently. I would test this out but I am out of Noctua 80mm fans as I rarely have a use for them. Plus, I am pretty happy with the current performance. It's 22C in my office right now and my 6700K is running at 31C with normal computing, which I'm fine with.

[/IMG]

i cant see and bracket. planning on using this setup also.

I'm not sure I understand your question, but if you are asking if there is an included bracket for this setup, yes, there is!

Also, unless you plan on liquid nitrogen overclocking, you are fine with a 4pin. :)

Hey, just wanted to ask a question... I'm not asking to try and bump Josh, as I know he's doing all he can, just wondering what you guys been doing with your components while waiting for your S4 Minis? This is all assuming you have one paid for and are waiting, as I am. My mistake, I guess, was ordering all of the parts and unrealistically having an "Amazon-like" mindset when it came to the S4 Mini.

Anyone else out there as impatient as I am? I have all parts except for the motherboard (waiting for the release of the ASUS Strix Z270i Gaming Motherboard), the processor (waiting for the public release of the Kaby Lake 7700T), the memory (waiting for the official Memory QVL for the aforementioned motherboard) and, of course, the S4 Mini.

I have 2 250GB 960 Evo drives that I'll be running in RAID0 (no important data will be on my S4 Mini, as it'll be used as a portable VR build and I don't want to use the SSD bracket. Plus, it's 3,200MB x 2 READ!!!), the brand-new 300W version of the HDPlex DC-ATX Power Supply (which awesomely and coincidentally matches my exact color scheme), a Genuine 330W Dell Power Brick, a EVGA GTX 1060 SC Edition 6GB, a Noctua L9i, a Steam Controller, a Bluetooth Xbox One Controller and a slick Logitech Keyboard with Touchpad.

I live about a half an hour away from my family. I'm out in the boondocks and they're in the city. They don't venture out often and my room-scale four-sensor Oculus Rift setup isn't really "mobile." I talk to them about VR and tell them it's cool, but they just don't get it. I want to go show them. So, I bought two more Oculus Sensors, a Pelican 1510 case, and a USB-powered monitor, in addition to all of the components listed above, and planned on taking a super compact setup over there so they could try out the Oculus Rift with Oculus Touch.

I ended up caving and ordered a "temp case" to hold me over until the S4 Mini arrives. I got the Thermaltake Core V1.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133260
Not quite as compact as the S4 Mini, but it'll temporarily get the job done. :)

I've also been passing the time by trying to customize what's going to go into the S4 Mini. My kids' school colors are red, black and white, so I got some electrical tape and zip ties (much tackier than a mesh sleeve, but I think it still looks pretty good) and wrapped all of the cords up and added zip ties for a bit of "flare."

Also, in an effort to maintain the color scheme, I am going to take a "here goes nothing" approach to dying my Noctua L9i fan. I have heard stories of success and of failure, so wish me luck. I'll be dying the casing red and the blades black (with Rit powder dye), and have already wrapped the cord in white electrical tape and red zip ties, as shown in the image. I'm pretty pumped to see what it all looks like once it's finished.

Well, sorry I went on so long. If you stuck with me, you probably troll SFF all day like I do and don't mind anyways. Just wanted to share my situation with some people that may get it, because my significant other and kids just don't understand.

P.S. Before anyone asks why I want to go with the 7700T instead of the 7700 or 7700K, it's obviously because of the TDP. I know that both the uppers are able to be brought down to the 7700T's level and that the inverse of that is not possible, but I wanted to take a more simplistic, out-of-the-box, "just works" approach to this build, instead of my usual incessant overclocking.

The only thing I've bought is my HDPlex 300W as I'm afraid itll go out of stock. As for the rest of the components, I'll just be waiting for my S4 mini shipping confirmation. I mainly worried that I'll receive a DOA component and miss a return window. Plus Asus hasn't stocked their Z270i yet (grumble grumble), so I wont be able to use/test any of my components :(

I almost bought bunch of parts before but luckily I didn't give in. There were a lot of changes, in terms of the parts I want to use, that would have made my initial purchases a waste. I suggest buy the parts that don't change significantly in short period of time (e.g. power supply, cpu cooler).

Exactly. That's what I did. The video card I wanted was not going to change, the 960 series M.2 SSDs just came out, and the HDPLEX and DELL power solution was a must. The rest I waited on because of Kaby Lake, which was at the time on the horizon. I don't care if it's a glorified overclock, Sky Lake is the same price, so it's a no-brainer.

Have you seen the STX160.0? It's got a face only a mother could love, while the S4 Mini is a work of art.

A S4 Nano* with that board would look amazing.

*Though I would humbly suggest picking a different naming scheme to make it easier to find your case without sorting out tons of Samsung stuff.

Agreed. The housing on that thing is gross. Not sure why companies love shiny black plastic so much.

@Tek Everything , @Aibohphobia was talking about his STX chassis.

the 4 pin connector should be sufficient - I've run 125w Phenoms off a 4 pin plug!

I did have this problem once with an i7-920. Symptoms were instability in windows, it would consistently crash on me. Took me a while to figure out i forgot to plug in the other half of the 4+4 eps plug. Granted that is a 130w TDP chip. Also, overclocking a CPU will cause it to pull more power from this connector, so you may have issues if you try to overclock with only a 4pin.

I have been trying out as many fan configs as possible, looking for the best combo of temps and noise levels. I bought a Scythe Slipstream 120mm x 12mm, but wasn't happy with the acoustics and lack of PWM support. So I picked up two Rosewill "Ultra Slim" 120mm x 15mm fans to test out.

I found that they fit comfortably under my Zotac 1050 Ti with the shroud/fan removed. I'm using Speed Fan to set a nice fan curve based on GPU temp. I'm seeing idle temps at 30-31C (1000RPM), and max load temps around 64C (1500RPM).

Initially the fans didn't fit in the bracket over the motherboard/CPU due to the height of my EVGA RAM. I then upgraded to shorter Corsair LPX series RAM which gives you just enough space for proper fitment.

To my ears these fans are quieter and also seem to move more air at lower RPM than the Scythe Slipstream. They are PWM fans, and have a black sleeved cable. The cable is actually long enough to snake from the GPU bay to your fan headers without an extension. So just another option to consider depending on your build.

Dude I'm just as hyped as you but I understand that Josh is working his butt off so I'm just waiting for his emails patiently since I know my motherboard and possible GPU arent even released yet. (lol)

So Far my build is (linked stuff has been bought already):
CPU: Intel Core i7-7700K 4.2GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L9i 33.8 CFM CPU Cooler
Motherboard: ASUS Z270i STRIX
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-4000 Memory
Storage: Intel 600p Series 256GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive
Storage: Seagate FireCuda Gaming SSHD 2TB SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" 7mm "ST2000LX001"
Video Card: Gigabyte 1070 mini or Gigabyte 1080 Mini (want to aim for 4K gaming and longevity if the 1080 can fit w/mods)
Case: NFC S4 Mini (Mini-ITX 4.3L) Chassis (w PCI-Ex Riser & Custom Vandal Switch)
DC-DC PSU: HDPLEX 300W (400W Peak) Hi-Fi DC-ATX Power Supply
DC-AC Power Brick: Dell 330W DA330PM111 AC Adapter charger
Case Fans: 2x Rosewill "Ultra Slim" 120mm x15mm fans

I alro preemtively bought some stuff Josh had linked to in the description of the 1070-mini S4 mini video:
Black VHT Vinyl dye
Gaffer's Tape
Electrical Tape
LCDglue double-sided tape (high bond)
And I borrowed a dremel with a super thin bit to mod the HDPLEX so i can use my stock power plug with a taller GPU by cutting into the HDPLEX PCB as Josh showed in the 1070 mini video. Also I'm gonna use that dremel to mod the 1080 if I find out it can fit with some minor trimming of the shroud/aluminum fins.

And finally, since this will also be my media PC too, I plan to add a Seagate 5TB Barracuda 2.5-Inch 15mm Internal HDD (ST5000LM000) in the future... but I'm scared of having all my sensitive media on my 5TB drive that is 15mm thick, practically touching the back of a 1080 or 1070 on the stock SSD bracket... I need to wait for my S4 to be in hand before I can look at the inner frame and see if I can fit that 15mm HDD somewhere else in the case, mounted to the inner frame (even if i have to screw my own mounting holes).

Jay, dude you saved me! I was ABOUT to buy 2x 2000RPM slipstreams for my S4 mini today on Amazon. I saw these Rosewill fans on Amazon and I'll be buying 2 of these instead. :D Thank you for the comprehensive review!

I purchase two Scythe SY1212SL12H-P 120mm slim fan and they work great and quite! They are 2000 rpm and have pwm control as well.

That is the exact model I bought from Amazon. It is not a PWM fan, at least mine isn't. Does yours have a 4-pin connector?

I have tried a few models, but the Rosewill was the only fan outside of the Scythe that I like so far. I think we are all just waiting for the Noctua 120mm x 12mm to FINALLY be released.

Ha, they are both good fans I don't want to steer anyone in the wrong direction. The Scythe model offers greater component flexibility. You could try one of each and see which you like more.

^ yeah that is the one. If you go lower RPM too you can end up hurting your temps. Adding a fan does not help your noise BTW so anyone reading this if you want the quietest solution go with the NH-L9i!

Have you tried the prolimatech ultra sleek vortex 12?
It's a slim 120, I've got the 140mm version and it wasn't too impressive how I was using it.

@1461748123 Ahhh I see, that is really disappointing. I need to find the PWM version. I don't see any on Amazon or Newegg...

RAGGEEEEEE!!!!

Yes! Please release it Noctua!

If it's not released by Computex, I will go to your booth and force you to sell me one of the prototypes XD

Noctua will release it the same day Half Life 3 comes out.
