@Josh | NFC , can I use your Sketchup model of this case to make a variety of the case for personal use? After a lot of planning I decided I want to go with this design for a custom case. And I want to keep the costs almost zero since already have enough spare aluminum to at least start on the frame.

Hi Josh. I have a quick question... What type of pins would you use to reterminate the HDPLEX power cables after shortening them?

Also, if you were to use 550 paracord to sleeve these cables, would you typically put 1 or 2 cables per paracord?

I've one strategic question to ask.
In my configuration, I'm planning to prioritize 35W CPU (like i7 6700T, C/T 4/8, 2.8Ghz/3.6Ghz, TDP 35W) over like 65W CPU (like i7 6700, C/T 4/8, 3.4Ghz/4.0Ghz, TDP 65W) or even 91W CPU (like 6700K, C/T 4/8, 4.0Ghz/4.2Ghz, TDP 91W).
I'm considering that modern games are more GPU limited than CPU limited. Core i7 6700T is pretty similar to laptop cpu, that is not bad at all.
Moreover I must admit that S4 mini has limited cpu cooling capacity, even with noctua one.

I'm also planning to compensate lower cpu speed by using DDR4@3200 as it's clearly improving performance (up to 10% on majority of game, especially on lowest FPS).

what is your opinion about that?

You can always get a 6700K and undervolt it within the thermal bounds of your cooler only if there is a problem with cooling. This is my preference since I 6700T is effectively just under volted and under clocked and quite often you can under volt stock a little to reduce heat and power consumption while remaining stable. At the very least you would get the most performance you possibly can out of the 6700 for the case and cooler.

in fact I made the same thought in parallel with Josh..:) Core i7 6700K undervolt/underclock to proper level..:)

Well, I've just found this cpu cooler that could be a very good choice for S4 Mini :
ID Cooling IS-VC45

Main properties :
  • 45mm tall with fan 92 of 15mm height (could be replaced by Noctua NF-A9x14 14mm height, and silent)
  • Vapor chamber design => 130W TDP (and it works..:))
  • Quite expensive (65$/€)

Hardforum feedback on LGA2011
Tom hardware review, competing with bigger cpu cooler
TweakTown review

It seems I've found my cooler for my S4 mini..:):)

what is your opinion about it?

These guys compared it to a regular IS-40 and Noctua NH-L9i and found it was not much better considering the additional price tag. This was the reason I got the IS-40pro over the IS-VC45.

I've only done a little testing so far and its far from conclusive but the IS-40PRO is performing very well in comparison with their results even with the S4 side cover on with my high ambient temps of 30C and 84TDP cpu. Their tests were run open air and on a 65TDP so I think the 130TDP rating on that cooler is highly exaggerated but it does seem to handle the higher synthetic loads a little better.

I think what's interesting about that cooler is the ways you can modify it. As there are no heatpipes going through the fins, you could grind or file the fins down if it was just a little too big for your case. You can also easily decouple the fan by mounting it with foam tape or something like that.

Other than that, why not get an NH-L9 instead? The IS-40 looks like a much better choice, though, especially when you're looking at the price.

In the review I posted above you can see the IS-40 performs roughly the same but for half the price, the IS-40Pro has an additional heat pipe and still costs exactly the same as the IS-40 but performs better. IS-VC45 is probably the best cooler you can fit in the case but I think IS-40Pro holds best value.

When I get paid next I might order a IS-VC45 and do a side by size comparison with the IS-40Pro, its unfortunate I do not have and NH-L9 to test as well.

IS-VC45 + the fan from the NH-L9 would be a very good combo but rather pricey.

So after some more investigation this evening I would not recommend either the IS-40Pro or IS-VC45 for the S4 mini.

Although on paper and in open air tests the IS-40Pro and IS-VC45 might perform better than the LH-9H they sit too close against the vents and create high pitched turbulence noise that is pretty terrible even for someone like me who doesn't care too much about fan noise.

I had not noticed until now because I use large desk fans in my office that drown out the sound, under load the sound is even more noticeable and high pitch.

So my conclusion is the LH-9Hi will be a better fit for this case with its lower height and no doubt quieter and higher quality fan, I manually raised the vents 8mm from the fan and it already made a huge difference in acoustics at idle and medium loads.

I will be replacing my IS-40Pro with a LH-9Hi the first chance I get but could be some time because I can't find it here in Thailand and when I do I will also try swapping the fans to see how much difference the higher quality fan makes to the IS-40pro in terms of noise or if you really just need that extra 8mm+ gap that the LH-9Hi provides

Thank you Michael for your feedback.

In fact I was guessing than in a closed box, the combo Slip stream 120mm + CNPS2X could be a great choice as they are truly able to bring fresh air inside the box..:)

Debate is opened..:)

Josh has just posted a new video S4 mini and Asus GTX 970 Directcu mini (that has tall (but excellent) cooler).
There is mainly impact on power input. Putting this video card in S4 mini is great, waiting for Pascal and Polaris (R9 480 announced today..:))

I had not realised oversized cards would not fit and didn't really pay any notice before hand but when I was putting mine together that I found have an oversized card too GV-N960OC-2GD WINDFORCE 2X which is roughly the same size as the Asus card. I managed to get mine to fit by using one screw on the HDPLEX power connector, my case was not modded for the HDPLEX anyway and it fit just fine, the power connector does sit on a slight angle like Josh mentioned and one screw is plenty to keep it in firmly.

In other news, Pico Box released a replacement for the Z3-ATX-200 with heat spreaders very recently. I've also been on contact with them and they may still make the X3-ATX-300 on the old PCB which will make it a cheaper and more powerful drop in replacement for the HDPLEX 250W.

Well I've just ordered is-vc45. For sure I'll get a try on this cpu cooler.

Good news for pico psu up to 300w...big heatsink indeed. After i fear it's requires to have a fan nearby to cool it.

The addition of heat spreaders was actually to minimize the need for a fan, the previous model had no heat spreader but got very hot if you did not add them. I have the previous model so I will post you some temperatures as reference when I get some time but these heat spreaders will do a much better job than my little stick on ones.

Whoa! I got behind on these--dunno why my little forum alarm doesn't show more!

Do you have to do any modifications by using HDplex + Dell 330w? Somewhere I read about something like you have to tell the Brick, whether you use a 330w or a 220W device.

I've built a good number of S4s now with the HDPLEX and Dell 330 and I have not had to do this...I'm not even sure how you would?

Yup. Anyone can copy anything they want for personal use. It would of course be classy to attribute and link people back to my chassis, and I would appreciate it. :)

I use Molex Mini Fit Jr 5556 (Part # 39-00-0038). I also only use Molex brand crimpers (or MDPC, --they might be the same.) They are expensive as heck but worth it. I highly recommend you purchase Molex brand ONLY for the pins, and adjust the part # for your wire gauge on your project.

I think it would look super ghetto to use more than one wire per sleeve.

what is your opinion about that?

Having benchmarked a i7-4765T directly against my overclocked X99 cpu with the intention of measuring CPU bottleneck, I can say the difference is small enough for me to choose the 6700T if it is available and reasonably priced.

Because it is NOT always available and reasonably priced, I have been reaching for the new 65w version of the 6700, which is also fantastic.

I can see someone purchasing a K variant if they ever plan to put their build in a big tower with big cooling for overclocking, but honestly the turboboost of the 6700(65w) is extremely good already and isn't going to be holding back any GPU that fits in the Mini.

I use alot of CPU-pegging apps too, but I just don't think the K is worth the heat tradeoff when pegged.

Just got some exciting news from Pico Box that is good news for the S4 mini and other DC-ATX cases for the future, they will creating a version of the X3-ATX-300 with a board layout to match the HDPLEX 250W size and mounting holes as a cheaper, more powerful drop in replacement. It will take 2-3 weeks to finish and they will be sending me a prototype to test and review.
