From my point of view the most sensible NAS configuration is RAID 5, so 3x3.5 HDDs. Minimum would be RAID1, so two HDDs. Don't know what fits :)

Maybe it would make more sense to make a case for two 5,25" trays. this way people can also use the case for optical disc drives. For HDDs you can use adapters or quick swap cases (there are also 3D printed ones).

  • support for 80x10mm case fans and 2.5 slot GPUs (300x85x194mm)
  • only vent slots, no additional case fans, 2 slot GPUs (300x70x194mm)

Could the GPU/hdd case be adjustable in height? A basic track on the end, to adjust to multiple fans sizes, and could be slimmer for hard drives.

2,5 slot would be my choice. In the end 15 mm height difference is negligible but it gives you more opportunities.
