I was going to comment about the limited options for half-height cards before realizing that the people who go with those HEDT boards and processors for workstation use probably only want them for the practical benefits of more cores on the machine and wouldn't be well served by a more powerful graphics card.

Exactly, and a GTX 1050 Ti is still a decent card even for gaming.

kinda curious, would having a face or two exposed to the outside the case (either within case bounds, or slightly "proud") help in cooling down the PSU?

What would help the most is isolating the PSU from the heat inside the case.

Curious though, what made you go with the FlexATX in the end?

The 300W AC-DC wasn't available before I left for Japan so I didn't have a choice.

love the sliding core concept.

Honestly I won't do that design again. Unless it's precisely manufactured with low-friction (Teflon or whatever) inserts it doesn't really work that well in practice.

superb stuff!
I loved this project, its definitely one of my favorites

for the GPU, there are a lot of quadro and WX cards that are low profile and are made especially for 3d CAD workloads, so there's that.

Yes, but the 650W's fan maxes out at 16,000 RPM. I'm hopeful but I'll wait and see if the noise is acceptable at normal SFF loads before designing around it.

Edit: here's an Imgur album summarizing the build log

In fact, it's only for low profile gpu, why going on flex atx? 300w, 350w should be far enough, no?

Because the the processors going in there need that much power, plus some to spare in order to keep things efficient and quiet.

No because as Jolokia is still a low profile, CPU OC is clearly limited...so for me 300-400W is clearly enough. That means even hdplex 300W could handle components of Jolokia.

Yup, there will almost certainly never be a KI case that's designed primarily for an external brick.

Good! :p

Amazing work James, still impressed and amazed by the ingenuity and internal power supply.
I didn't know you had 4 of the little beasties tucked away. I'd be tempted, but the expense would break the bank, with buying pretty much new everything to fit the case. I'll have to re read the thread to remind me of the size.
I can see the frustration with the sliding case design, but it is elegant nevertheless; and proven to work by accompanying you on your trip to Asia.

It definitely works, but I'll probably just split up the panels if I ever do a design like that again.

Could you split them on the top and bottom? Or on the side, down the middle? The former seems more practical, but on the latter it might be cool to play with the shape of the split, it would be more prominent.

I'd probably just keep it simple and split out the back panel the same as the current side panel.
