I finally got both of my PackedPixels working thanks to the new generation MST hub:
https://www.cablematters.com/pc-122...th-dual-displayport-and-hdmi-for-windows.aspx For some reason pairing previous generation MST hubs with PackedPixels worked with Windows 7 but not on Windows 10 -- PP support said two years ago they are aware but didn't have a solution. This is MST hub is based on the
Synaptics VMM5320.
This was just a quick plug test to see it works, I blacked out my gmail, the screen is not distorted as you can see on the toolbar and it's not a mirror, you can see the mouse cursor on the right but not the left:
To compare, the active area of the TP25 screen + the two iPad panels (the PackedPixel is using the same panel as the iPad) is 96% of the active area of the two displays of the W701ds with half the weight, significantly faster CPU, signifcantly faster GPU, faster storage (but it's 4.5TB tops vs the 12TB of the old one), potentially more RAM (I haven't tested 64GB in mine yet) and four times as fast external PCI Express. It's also easier to pack due to how much thinner the laptop is and the panels can be packed separately (check my bag
review on how neatly this setup packs into a small bag). It's a bit more work to set up than just pulling out the side screen of the W701ds. Also, there are way, way more pixels: the old one was 1440 × 900 + 768 x 1280 which just the 1920x1080 main screen almost reaches, the PPs are three megapixels each...
While I do not think these displays are easily obtainable now, there's a new Packed Pixels Go using the same crafty mounting mechanism which are very slightly larger and use HDMI or USB C inputs -- on my laptop that would make the MST hub unnecessary as I have a physical HDMI output and a USB C output. But it'd be a significant cost for almost no benefit given that I already have the older ones. They also have Packed Pixels 4K which are 15.6" and mounting two 15.6" displays on a 14" laptop would be bloody ridiculous and these are double the weight of the smaller ones -- I am not going there.
Edit: I forgot the TP25 actually has a 940MX in it because I rarely if ever use it, I usually only play video games when at home and I have a 1060 eGPU. Anyways, makes the GPU much faster, too.
