SFF Time P-ATX v4 (16th June 2026) : Is a new legend born?

With the recent pre-release of the SFF Time P-ATX v4 I wanted to test it, in direct competition to my beloved Cerberus-X. Thanks to @riba2233 for his dedication to develop & build such cases!

Compared to my previous SFFTime experience (N-ATX v2 and U-ITX v1), P-ATX represents the middle ground, 11L.compatible with 63mm CPU coolers and 360mm long GPU.

The main improvements are :
  • Steel frame, including all the screw threads
  • 3D printed parts improving the experience :
    • PSU bracket with easier handling
    • Very significantly improved stand, holding firmly, easier to put on and off. It is also completely independent of side panels.
    • The best, so far, GPU riser bracket. Easy to assemble, easy to adjust GPU thickness, even while in position inside the case.
    • The GPU locking mechanism is pretty good and maintain the GPU in firm position

Here is the setup I decided to put inside the P-ATX v4 :
  • Motherboard : MSI Z890 MAG Tomahawk Wifi
  • CPU : Intel Core Ultra 7 270K Plus, undervolt -70mV VCore, Max Temperature 95°C
  • RAM : Corsair Vengeance 2x24Go DDR5 7600 MTS CL36 (XMP I profile)
  • CPU Cooler : Noctua NH-L9x65, Fins towards the Top, 1xNF-A9x14 (2200rpm model) as intake
  • RTX 5090 FE : Undervolted (MSI Afterburner)
    ---Max Core Clock : 2700Mhz
    ---Offset Core Clock : +700Mhz
    ---Offset GDDR7 Clock : +6000
  • SSD #1 : Samsung 9100 Pro 2To (Slot 1 gen5) - used for Cachy OS
  • SSD #2 : WD SN850X 2To (Slot 2 gen4) - used for Win 11
  • SSD #3 : ADATA SX8200 Pro 2To (Slot 3 gen4) - Storage (exFat)
  • SSD #4 : empty
  • PSU : Corsair SF1000, standard cables
  • Back Fan : 1xFractal HP-12 (~1100rpm, 60% PWM) as exhaust

As I'm using an Intel socket with a motherboard with a 6-layers pcb, I was able to fit a Noctua NH-L9x65 with still a 5mm clearance including the side panel, clearly enough to avoid any major air turbulence.

The NH-L9x65 is capable of sustaining 270K while using 130W-160W (Cinebench 2024 or shaders compilation), depending on the ambient temperature. I also need to measure the impact of changing the fans as the NF-A9x14 has 2 versions : 2700 rpm or 2200rpm. I prefer by far the 2200rpm version as the motor noise is significantly lower vs the 2700 version, even at the same RPM. For example, I can allow the 2200 to spin at 100%, whereas the 2700 is limited to 60% (1900rpm). At last I would also need to also test the impact of the orientation of the fins/heatpipes...but it would have to wait. Overall this Noctua NH-L9x65 is impressing me, compared to my terrible souvenirs inside the Node 202.


What about CPU-GPU combined performance ?

To answer this difficult question I decided to use 007 First Light, during the night club mission. While using DLAA, this crowdy area is demanding on both the RTX 5090 (480W-505W) and the 270K (100-120W).

Here is the result, with pretty high ambient temperature of 29°C :


The RTX 5090 FE is sitting within the high seventies, low eighties (max is 82.8°C), however its fan speed is reaching only 1721 rpm (54%), which is acceptable in this setup.
The 270K+ is sitting in the high eighties or low nineties (max is 95.5°C) and the fan speed is reaching its max, ie 2325rpm on a regular basis. As previously stated, having this fan, NF-A9x14 2200, spinning at its max, is not bothering me.
DDR5 is reaching 75°C max , a similar temperature as my main SSDs (70°C, 74°C, 59°C).
Also, note that, once the load is down, the setup is cooling down almost immediately on all components, translating there is no hot air trapped inside the case!

As you are starting to know me, the most important factor remains the noise of my setup. On this point, the P-ATX v4 is ok, maybe a bit louder than the Cerberus-X under load...but not that much. Of course, on idle, the RTX 5090 FE fanless mode is not eternal (unlike the Cerberus-X with 2x fans blowing on it) but the back fan is helping a lot to keep it significantly longer than on my FormD T1.

I want to insist that there is no noticeable air turbulence noise from the GPU, unlike the FormD T1 with the RTX 5090 FE with offset mode.

In conclusion the P-ATX v4 is proving very comfortable to use, either on idle, or while heavy gaming sessions. I'll continue to use/test it, even with the hot summer coming..:)

SFF Time P-ATX v4 (20th June 2026) : Testing the NH-L9x65

Following my initial testing where I noticed a pretty high gap on the CPU power dissipated by the Noctua NH-L9x65, I decided to deep dive into it.

Here is my method :
  • Test while using the Noctua NF-A9x14 2200 vs Noctua NF-A9x14 2500
  • Test with or without the side panel
  • Using Cinebench 2024 Multi core
  • 270K setup :
    • Max Operating temperature : 95°C (defaut is 105°C)
    • VCore Offset : -0.07v

Here are the results :
  • NH-L9x65 Fins to top, NF-A9x14 Chromax (2500), Side Panel Off, Ambient 28°C
    • Cinebench 2024 : 2103
    • Average CPU power : 151.589W
    • Average CPU temperature : 94°C
    • Average Fan speed : 2678 rpm
    • Noise : Humming noticeable, OK
  • NH-L9x65 Fins to top, NF-A9x14 Chromax (2200), Side Panel Off, Ambient 28°C
    • Cinebench 2024 : 2085
    • Average CPU power : 146.706W
    • Average CPU temperature : 94°C
    • Average Fan speed : 2221 rpm
    • Noise : Light Humming, Very good
  • NH-L9x65 Fins to top, NF-A9x14 Chromax (2200), Side Panel On, Ambient 28°C
    • Cinebench 2024 : 1953
    • Average CPU power : 132.706W
    • Average CPU temperature : 95°C
    • Average Fan speed : 2304 rpm
    • Noise : Light Humming, OK. The pitch of the noise changed and is higher
The positive note is that I managed to reach the performance observed previously (approx 160W with the 2700 rpm).
The negative note is that the side panel is decreasing cooling performance significantly (-15/20W) and also creating some noticeable air turbulence noise (higher pitch), despite having 5mm clearance.
Keep in mind that those air turbulence impacts are not noticeable (2200 rpm) while the RTX 5090 FE fans are spinning.

Those results are promising enough to try even more to maximize cooling performance from the P-ATX v4. Stay tuned!

I would really like to see how the AXP-X53 copper with a good 25mm thick fan would work, it is slightly shorter so it should have lower turbulence noise and it should also cool better :)
Well, well, my experience with AXP90-47 just vaccined me against such BS mounting mechanism of those AXP90 family. The AXP120 is OK, but 67mm cpu cooler will fit, but would generate too much noise...:)

Hopefully the CPU cooler I just ordered will rule them all..:)

SFF Time P-ATX v4 (28th June 2026) : Testing the NH-L12S

As I was able to fit the NH-L9x65 inside the P-ATX v4, even with a 4-5mm clearance, I was thinking another upgrade was possible on the CPU cooler.

In this range of height, I was thinking of the Noctua L12S (70mm height) or the Noctua L12 Ghost S1 Edition (66mm height).

Based on this excellent review from Tom’s Hardware that is comparing most of the SFF coolers from Noctua back to 2023 (NH-L12S, NH-L12 Ghost S1, NH-L9x65 & NH-D9L), the Noctua L12 Ghost S1 is on par with performance with the NH-L9x65, but it is significantly quieter.

My issue with the L12 Ghost S1 is that there is no official support for 120mm x 15mm fans. The heatsink is different between the L12 Ghost and the L12S.

Thus I decided to try the Noctua L12S, despite its 70mm height. Why? Because, the L12S was regularly shrinked/squeezed to 66mm to fit the Ghost S1 at that time.

Finally, bending with hands the heatsink of the L12S was way easier than anticipated. I managed to get around 66-67mm in less than 5 minutes. I paired it with a NF-A12x15 Chromax fan (1850rpm) as an intake.

The second difficult step was to fit the L12S on the motherboard. This step was expected to be difficult as my RAM (Corsair Vengeance) or VRM heatsink won’t be compatible with the reduced height. My only hope was the orientation with the heatpipes towards the bottom (GPU)...and it fits!
Please note it won’t work with a mini-ITX motherboard and the same RAM.

What about the performance & noise?

Let’s start with Cinebench 2024, there is an improvement while the side panel is on :

    • Cinebench 2024 : 2085
    • Average CPU power : 146.706W
    • Average CPU temperature : 94°C
    • Average Fan speed : 2221 rpm
    • Noise : Light Humming, Very good
  • NH-L9x65 Fins to top, NF-A9x14 Chromax (2200), Side Panel On, Ambient 28°C
    • Cinebench 2024 : 1953
    • Average CPU power : 132.706W
    • Average CPU temperature : 95°C

But I would need to redo some additional tests if the ambient temperature & Windows update will let me to do so. I’ll try to find a better pure cpu test on Linux where I can control the OS.


Now let’s see the performance & gaming performance during a gaming session. For this I used, once again, the excellent game 007 First Light, in the night club session, with the same parameters as for the NH-L9x65.



What to say comparing the L9x65? Well, the differences are very obvious!
  • Test performed at around 29°C ambient
  • Intel Ultra 7 270K Plus (~100-120W) : With the L12S, no more thermal throttling! While the L9x65 was sitting very often on 95°C (thermal limit i'm using), the L12S is sitting between 81-85°C. On the noise side, it is even better. The L12S is spinning at 1200-1300rpm whereas on the L9x65 it is spinning at 2200-2300 rpm constantly.
  • Nvidia 5090 FE UV (~480-505W) : On this one, both setups are behaving in a similar way. Peak GPU core is ~83°C, with fans spinning at 1730rpm / 55%.
  • DDR5 : On this one, this is another win for the L12S as the DDR5 sticks reached 71°C/67°C versus 75°C. No impact on performance however.
  • SSDs : Here is another win for the L12S. While on the L9x65 they reached (70°C, 74°C, 59°C), with the L12S, they reached (65°C, 72°C, 58°C). Those results are logical as the first SSD is sitting just below the L12S fan. No impact on performance however.

Overall the Noctua L12S is a massive win versus the L9x65. I would even say that the P-ATX v4 paired with a L12S is becoming a very potent case, especially as it is possible only with ATX motherboards.
The real & almost only advantage of the Cerberus-X over the P-ATX v4 is its capacity to keep the fanless mode of the RTX 5090 FE…but at a cost of 4x120 fans.

For now, I will continue using the P-ATX v4 as I’m even forecasting my next upgrade to it !

Im going to order this case next week when it comes back on sale. Any recommendations on motherboard and cooler? The only thing I have to work around is my 5090 Suprim (so Itx board). I have a 9800x3d but would happily swap to a Intel CPU if necessary, but I guess while the Intel motherboards tend to be better than AMD counterparts, they run hotter so its quite the dilemma, with limited cooler options.

Ideally a nice quiet build. My 5090 Suprim is really quiet with no coil whine, so that is a bit of a unicorn. Already have a 1000w Corsair SFX psu bought ready. The dream would be 3 nvmes, but I think I may have to settle for two.

The N ATX would be tempting which is restocking in a few weeks iirc) but id be too paranoid about stripping screws honestly. :)

You can continue with your R7 9800X3D. Select a B850 motherboard, either from Asus or MSI, but avoid any X870 MB.
In fact, between Intel & AMD, at ISO cooler, Intel are colder than AMD, despite using more wattage. Anyway the R7 9800X3D is pretty good, even if I find it hard to cool efficiently, due its chiplet & boost designs. I prefere the 270K behaviour (lower wattage at idle) and OK in load.
In terms of CPU cooler, aim for ths IS-53XT with a 25mm thick fan.

One important point is that the RTX 5090 Suprim will heat the full P-ATX v4, that will rely on passive cooling to evacuate all this heat. With my RTX 5090 FE undervolt, the double passthrough design was working well to direct the airflow out of the case, but I even went into some indirect thermal issues (more to come).
My point is that I fear that your RTX 5090 Suprim would overheat either the MB & PSU, while it is under load.
Based on my previous experience with N-ATX, U-ITX and now P-ATX, even if it can fit a massive GPU, the main bottleneck is related to their capacity to evacuate heat. Passthrough GPU like the RTX FE (30XX to 50XX) are working very well as they expulse most of their heat directly outside the case. However the opened GPU cooler, like on the suprim, are not.

My point is that you can try the P-ATX v4 with your RTX 5090 suprim, but it can failed, indirectly.

Thank you for all the information. I didnt realize the Intel Cpus ran cooler. Id probably get the Asrock Nova 890i in that case, as it has 3 nvmes and in black.

All that said if the Suprim is going to have problems it might be worth looking at alternative cases. I could sell the 5090 and while the FE is unavailable the 5090 Pro Art might be an option. Its just that its say 600 extra pounds for a unit that may well have coil whine. Decisions, decisions!

All that said if the Suprim is going to have problems it might be worth looking at alternative cases. I could sell the 5090 and while the FE is unavailable the 5090 Pro Art might be an option. Its just that its say 600 extra pounds for a unit that may well have coil whine. Decisions, decisions!

Suprim is a good card, but you are right 5090 Pro art would be ideal for this P-ATX v4. I would even say, better than the FE on idle workload as the heatsink is beefier (better to keep fanless mode longer).
In the P-ATX v4, you would have no issue to run a double passthrough RTX 5090 FE or pro art with a mini ITX motherboard (skip the micro ATX or ATX form factor for this case + RTX 5090 GPU).

I really appreciate the P-ATX v4, thus I advice you to try it with your 5090 suprim, but be ready for obvious adjustements, undervolting the GPU, the CPU and see the outcome..:)

Funnily enough a really small amount of units just went on sale an hour ago. I have ordered mine. The photos they promoted it with was with a 4090 Strix, that has a similar open grill to mine. Before I disassembled my PC I did try running games with all my case fans disabled and it wasn't bad at all from memory (mainly from the perspective of how loud the gpu fans got).

Honestly the 5090 Suprim is such a unit, I think it may do pretty well. The awkward middle ground would be a none flow through, that hasn't such a big heat sink IMO.

The Risers that were available were all gen 4. I'll look into if gen 4 is worth it, but from a very early Tech Power Up article, it dosnt look like it makes much difference.. especially at 4k what I play at (-1-2% max).

So now I have direction its time to narrow down CPU and board. Id love 3 nvme drives as I mentioned but will have to see. I have 3 SN850x (two 4tb double sided, one 2tb single sided). I normally like to put my windows partition on the 2tb and use the other two for game storage. I saw on a previous post you dont like active cooling (small fans) and im definitely with you on that. The last part of the puzzle is putting as effective cooling on it as possible.

If I can tame a 270k Plus then the z890i wifi is probably the way to go. I do like the 9800x3d but the ITX AM5 motherboards aren't that great IMO. Hoping some better ones come out for the next cpu refresh, thst are on the same socket.

Im looking forward to testing it vertical vs horizontal as well. :)

Moving to Z890i boards, the MSI Z890i is great but its VRM fan is horrible, but 4xSSDs are easy accessible..:) And I agree with you that AM5 Mini ITX line ups is far from ideal!

For riser, I tested one gen 5 but it failed to fit mechanically. Anyway gen 4 is removing any significant performance.

With regards to 9800x3d vs 270k AI seems very confident that the former will be easier to keep cool, but I know you said it should be the other way around?

Regarding the CPU cooler, the AXP90-53 has the best heatsink for tiny 92mm cpu cooler, even if its assembly process is total BS (for my point of view). However, DO NOT USE it with a slim fan (either 15mm native fan of 14mm Noctua) inside the P-ATX. Why? With 10-15mm gap you will recycle hot internal for sure. Forget the fan duck as you can put a 25mm thick fan instead. @riba2233 is always considering extra space to avoid air turbulence. You would need to use cable ties, metal wire to maintain the fan on the heatsink. Personnally I would prefer using the ID-Cooling IS-53-XT, performing a little bit worse than the AXP90, but with a top notch assembly mechanism, and you just need 30mm m3 screww to fit a 25mm fan...easy to find.

Regarding the CPU, you better keep the R7 9800X3D with no major issues. Just undervolt as much as you can. It would reach 95°C under loard, whatever you could do with this heatsink. Those AMD CPU are meant for that. As motherboard, just go the Asus/MSI B850. You can use external drive for your remaining ssd (just enable cache performance in wriing in Windows to get best performance).

The Risers that were available were all gen 4. I'll look into if gen 4 is worth it, but from a very early Tech Power Up article, it dosnt look like it makes much difference.. especially at 4k what I play at (-1-2% max).

So now I have direction its time to narrow down CPU and board. Id love 3 nvme drives as I mentioned but will have to see. I have 3 SN850x (two 4tb double sided, one 2tb single sided). I normally like to put my windows partition on the 2tb and use the other two for game storage. I saw on a previous post you dont like active cooling (small fans) and im definitely with you on that. The last part of the puzzle is putting as effective cooling on it as possible.
If I can tame a 270k Plus then the z890i wifi is probably the way to go. I do like the 9800x3d but the ITX AM5 motherboards aren't that great IMO. Hoping some better ones come out for the next cpu refresh, thst are on the same socket.

Im looking forward to testing it vertical vs horizontal as well. :)
I’d definitely test the Suprim before changing GPUs. With that huge heatsink and some undervolting, it may work better than expected. I’m also curious whether vertical vs horizontal orientation makes a noticeable difference to GPU and motherboard temperatures in such a tight case.

Based on my experiences on the N-ATX, horizontal stand is worth overall on the thermals. On top of that, you have to secure firmly the GPU. I clearly don't recommand the horizontal stand.
