Since this is the best thread about this topic: I just wanted to say that i felt the urgent need to replace my 3070. So i replaced it... with a used 3090.
It's coming: Part 2 of Sliger CL530: Tame the RTX 3090.... again.

I hope you're ok with me using this thread for it @MarcParis 😎

Well, let’s start then! 🤗

According to the experiences shared in here, it was a very tight fit with the 3090 FE. So i went with a smaller version, the PNY GeForce RTX 3090 XLR8 Gaming Revel Epic-X RGB Triple Fan (who comes up with these names?), maybe the smallest version there is. Here is a comparison with my trusted modded ASUS 3070 Dual OC, a card which is far from the biggest 3070 out there.
This 3090 is so small, even 120mm fans won't fit.

Had to order 92mm ones. The good thing about it: 3 of them will fit! :)

The bad thing: With 350 instead of 220W TDP, this thing is friggin loud! Those tiny fans rotate at up to 3600 turns per minute. This needs to be fixed.
Also the VRAM-Temperature is very high, hitting 110 °C almost instantly.

weird, this is reminding my experience...:) RTX 3090 has to be undervolted
Here are my latest parameters :
  • Power limit 90%
  • Curve 806mV for 1800MHz
I added power limit for certain games where power consumption was climbing to 350w despite my customed Vcore curve.
Approximately same performance as stock setup with way less noise.

I ordered some GP Ultimate Pads from Gelid. Will continue after they arrived.

Atm the card is running at 756 mV @ 1695 MHz with power limited to 54-60%. Basically a 3070 with 24 GB. :p

The NF-A9 arrived and are prepared already. I just need some fan adapters for them. So the 3090 can control them, not the motherboard.
(This is the reason for the 60%. The fan curve for the GPU fans is tied to the CPU temperature).

Update: The Noctua-Edition: These 3 fans fit like they've been made for this cooler. :)

And the backplate: This PCB is so small.

with this noctua fan, are you still within 3 slots GPU size?

Yes, this cooler is about the same height than the 3070 one. Plus it’s flat, no obstructions.

There is still some space left. You can even see the case fans.

Feels so spacious! 😊
Unfortunately I can’t test the next days. Am not at home.

Hei @timginter
Just saw your question: I didn't measure them yet. But these are 2.5 cm fans alone.
The whole card is taller than 5.5 cm, judging from the picture above. :(

According to this, she's 55.8 mm tall, with standard fans: https://geizhals.de/pny-geforce-rtx...ple-fan-edition-vcg309024tfxppb-a2366527.html

I don't think you can reasonably cool a 3090 with only 4.5 cm. At least not by air. Is liquid-cooling an option?
Thanks! I don't have enough space for liquid, unfortunately, it's a GPU upgrade for my lapdesk
https://smallformfactor.net/forum/threads/diy-laptop-portable-pc-5-4-litres-17-screen.15795/page-2. I could fit a taller card with 65mm standofs, but prices and performance would have to be good, I like the smaller format more than the overpriced crap Nvidia and AMD are releasing this generation
