Forum Feature: The Case Hoarding Therapy Group

Most of us are guilty of it – tech hoarding. Whilst some can justify it (all these parts are for review work, honest!), some just like to collect PC components. In “Dr” Arboreal’s thread, community members can come clean about their obsession – in this case, *cough*, cases. The first step is acknowledging the problem, right? Starting with Arboreal’s list of mostly Silverstone products, other forum members have started listing what they have sitting about, mostly SFF, but with a few larger enclosures hiding in the crowd. The broad spectrum of cases in the possession of the community is mindblowing …

Forum Feature: Sliger SM550/560

In a semi-regular series, we will have a short look at various projects and one-off builds in the forum. This is not a paid promotion in any way, just a selection of cool stuff we like! For those who dont know Sliger, you may be familiar with some of their work. They have built a strong portfolio in the SFF scene, producing cases such as the DSE Breathe and the Chimera Industries Cerberus. Today we are going to take a look at something new from them, the SM550 and SM560 cases, part of a series that spans the SM550, SM560, …

Forum Feature: SENTRY 2.0

In a semi-regular series, we will have a short look at various projects and one-off builds in the forum. This is not a paid promotion in any way, just a selection of cool stuff we like! Hot on the heels of the first generation Sentry, the Dr Zaber team has taken it upon themselves to update the concept. Taking feedback into account from the first production run, as well as crowdsourcing more, the team has stepped it up a notch (or three) in design and execution.   For most in the SFF community, the Sentry needs no introduction. However, for …

Performance Per Litre – An Interesting Metric

One of the more challenging threads on our community forum recently, has been focused entirely on seeing who’s system had the best performance density on the forum. Whilst benchmark competitions have usually been reserved for the wealthy, or the sponsored, this one has the ability to change that with a factor that our community excels at – creativity and going ever smaller. Not by having the fastest system, but the fastest per litre, our users can ‘compete’ on size as well as performance. Tweaking, overclocking, custom cases, smaller power supplies, and the like, are all valid ways to improve one’s ranks. The …

How STX Changed My View of SFF

This article marks a return to my editorial content – occasional articles entirely based on my personal opinion. These are part of a series focusing on issues in the SFF niche. All content is entirely opinion of myself, not of SmallFormFactor.net, and should not be taken as fact. For years, I was a Micro-ATX SFF stalwart. I never truly believed M-ITX could offer all I needed in a system, with lackluster networking, audio and storage solutions, as well as just poor physical design. CPU coolers sat too close to RAM or expansion slots, minimal drive expansion was available, and the …

Raven Ridge HDMI 2.0 Compatibility – Forum Members to the Rescue!

Our community forum is a fantastic place, with our users banding together to help out those of us who need assistance on various SFF related topics. Recently, user Hifihedgehog started a thread surrounding unofficial support of HDMI 2.0 with AMD’s new Raven Ridge APU platform. Whilst manufacturer specs have been vague on the situation, Hifihedgehog set out to find out exactly which motherboards support the standard with a Raven Ridge APU.   Fantastic news for Raven Ridge! Thanks to an adventurous redditor, it turns out that in at least one case HDMI 2.0 capability is, in fact, not dictated by the …

I Experienced Sennheiser’s HE-1.

Sennheiser, a brand with a significant history in audio equipment design and manufacture, recently invited me to experience their pinnacle achievement, the HE-1. A successor to Sennheiser’s original Orpheus headphones, the HE-1 is the result of years of no-compromises development led by Orpheus creator, Axel Grell, and directed by the Sennheiser family. While I’m sure you have heard of Sennheiser as a brand, you may not be aware of this headphone, DAC and amplifier combo, which is priced at the ultra-premium end of the range – at around 55,000 EUR. While I can’t do the description and hands on feel …

Event Focus – DJI’s Mavic Air Launch Event

Late last week, I had the pleasure of being invited to attend the NZ launch event for the DJI Mavic Air – a spiritual successor to the DJI Spark, but with Mavic 4 Pro inspired guts! This amazing little drone is a really impressive product, if a little (a lot) out of my price range! The specs and minutiae are available to read on the DJI website, however this is just a quick photo album of sorts of the event! Unfortunately I didn’t get any photos from the drones, but suffice it to say, the images I did see taken …

Meet the Creators: NCase’s Necere

The NCase, known by many as the quintessential “indie” SFF case, brought huge changes to our niche, and broadened many horizons in the community, from creators, to builders, to designers. Today we’ll be talking SFF with Necere, seeing what inspired and motivated one of the most well known creators in our community. This is the fourth in a series of “Meet the Creators”, a series of interviews with the designers and manufacturers active in our community. Our community helps foster …

Meet the Creators – SFFLab and Kimera Industries’ Joshua Ramirez

Tracking down this week’s Creator was a mission and a half. Joshua is busy developing SFFLab, launching the Cerberus, a Kimera Industries product, as well as performing administration for Minutiae Media! I only know of one other person as busy as Joshua, and he’s writing this article. This is the third in a series of “Meet the Creators”, a series of interviews with the designers and manufacturers active in our community. Our community helps foster the growth of the SFF world. Join our community today to chat alongside the masters. Let’s go! SFFn: What got you into SFF? JR: I was first interested …
