AMD Launches the Radeon Pro W5500

AMD has released the Radeon Pro W5500 – an RX5500 (or RX5500 XT depending on the yet to be disclosed clock speeds) wearing a shiny blue, rather slimming, suit. This single slot ‘Pro’ grade GPU is a RDNA gen 1 based product, built on TSMC’s FinFET 7nm node. With 22 Compute Units, a 125W TBP (Total Board Power), the card is a mid range performer. GDDR6, PCIe 4.0, and Professional grade drivers are the base bullet points with this card, along with a single slot form factor. The single slot form of the card seems to have been missed by …

SilverStone at Computex 2017 – Workstation and Server

Members of the forum are aware of this, but I’m a workstation and server nut. I love systems built for purpose, for work. Possibly because I work so hard in everything I do! When we visited the SilverStone booth at  Computex 2017, I was in awe of some of the hardware they had on display – cases and accessories built for purpose, for work! Sitting next to the bolder RVZ04, a much subtler chassis sat, the VT02. Much more my style! A couple of NUC cases and an external optical (what’s that?!) drive were nearby. Ah-hah! Workstation and storage stuff! From …

Intel Reportedly Readying Xeon Gold Processor Line

In what could be seen as a ‘throw enough stuff at the wall and hope something sticks’ reaction to AMD’s Ryzen (which also may explain the i3-7350K), TechPowerup is reporting (based on a Canard PC tweet, which is known to be a reputable source) that Intel is readying a new line of processors aimed at creative professional workstations. The new Xeon Gold processors will be based on the Skylake-EP architecture, and seemingly is targeted at those who desire server ‘reliability’ in their workstations. TechPowerup reports the first of these processors will be the Xeon Gold 6150, a 18 core, 36 thread (!!) SKU, …

AMD’s WX7100 Reviewed by Tom’s Hardware

Without a doubt, the AMD WX7100 GPU has been the most second most intriguing product from the Radeon workstation division in some time. (We reserve the top spot here for the SSD-enhanced Radeon Pro SSG) We covered the reveal a few months back, noting that this card is based on the Polaris 10 architecture, the same generation architecture found in the RX 480. It takes time to validate workstation grade hardware, and Tom’s Hardware has finally gotten their hands on a review unit. Featuring 144 texture units and 32 ROPs, the card is similar to the RX 480 in pure specs. …

Sapphire Sneaks in a Polaris Based Radeon Pro

With the launch a short time ago of the Radeon Pro line of GPUs, we’ve been patiently waiting for the launch of actual, physical products based on the line. Today we noticed that Sapphire had an interesting product sneakily added to their website, the Sapphire GPRO 8200. With specs somewhere in between the Radeon Pro WX7100 and WX5100, I believe this card is closer to the WX7100 GPU, a Polaris 10 product line, marking the first time we’ve seen a Radeon Pro card since the paper launch. Alas, AMD’s (amazing) YInMn blue does not make an appearance here, which is a …

Intel Manages to Get a 16 Core Xeon Under 45W.. With a Few Catches

Intel has launched their Xeon D-1571 SoC, a 16 core server and workstation class CPU that supports hyperthreading. This System on Chip SKU is based on the Broadwell architecture and Intel has managed to get it to run at 45w TDP! An amazing feat of engineering considering the CPU has 16 cores and HT, making 32 threads. This is an embedded style SoC though, and will only be available on pricey, but sturdy, server and workstation boards from the likes of Supermicro (like the one pictured above) and Tyan. Spec sheet courtesy of CPU-World.com. The catches? Well, it is an …
