I was wondering if there were any minimal steel or aluminum plates/frames that would be a good starting point to build a case around. I'm planning to 3D print everything else. I really just need something to make sure the motherboard is secure, so I am guessing a single plate might be enough. Any suggestions?

Probably more like the top one. Its going to have the GPU on the back like the A4. Where do you order something like that? I'm trying to keep it within 220 x 180 x 140 mm^3 roughly.

I haven't the slightest idea where to get one with a layout like the A4. Closest I can think of is Protocase. Alternatively, you could get one like the bottom, probably Amazon or eBay, and cut it up.

Yeah, it seems like most of them have GPU slots I will not need. Maybe the motherboard tray from that thread could work. I guess I could always print that too, but I am worried about how the plastic will hold up if I am traveling with it.
