AMD has announced the Radeon RX 7600 XT 16GB at CES 2024. During the announcement, AMD focused on the ability of content creators who may be using editing applications that require more VRAM than past cards offered. The card will retail for $329, and have the same core as the Radeon 7600 albeit with a bump in clock speed and power usage. Power is via twin 8-pin plugs.
From a SFF perspective this is a bit of a miss. The 16GB of memory is good to have, but the high power consumption coupled with the fact there aren’t any readily available SFF sized models gives no real incentive for most sub-8L users to look at this card. There could be some hope for the card in the 10L to 15L space for those looking for more memory, but at that point you have to weigh it against the RTX 4060Ti 16GB. The Nvidia model costs more, but uses substantially less power, has stronger support in the creative software markets, and superior Ray Tracing performance.
From a general gaming perspective the 16GB model for $329 isn’t a bad deal so long as you focus on the traditional rendering performance and not the ray tracing performance. Several games currently on the market eat VRAM like candy, and can get VRAM related stutters even at 1080P on 8GB cards. The closest priced competitor is the last-gen RTX 3060 12GB from Nvidia and the Intel Arc 770 16GB which hasn’t exactly taken the market by storm. At $329 for raster gaming it’s a solid offering.
AMD listed the length at 241mm and width as 2 slots in the specs of the card. However, that is for the reference design card. At 190 watts power consumption, there is the possibility of smaller single-fan cards making it into production, but dual fan cards would be far more likely. With the current trend of “BIGGER IS BETTER!!!!!” for GPUs, it’s really up in the air if we’ll see anything much smaller than the reference design.
Additionally, I want to point out that AMD is providing some lofty numbers for potential frame rates for this card. However, this is disingenuous as all of their performance numbers include FSR turned on in quality mode and with Frame Generation on.
