Wouldn't USB provide enough bandwidth?
USB 1.1 for sure, even rs232 serial would be fine. I had a few other considerations for the box this is going in to as well which ultimately led me to this device but its by no means the cheapest or likely most sensible solution for the majority of applications.

All that being said though, PCIe dial up modems are still, for the time being at least, a thing you can go out and buy on the second hand market easily if you want one :D
