I recently got an AOOSTAR AG02 eGPU Dock for testing and I thought I'd share my experience with the unit for the community...

The eGPU comes with everything needed, but here's the first issue: their WhatsApp account for contacting support seems to be disabled. If you have issues with your unit, you need to join their Discord or send them an eMail. Besides, the included USB4.0 / Oculink cables are very short (350mm only).

Overall build quality is good, they use a solid aluminium case with coated steel covers. The PSU is a GREAT WALL server grade 12V 800W unit, platinum rated for good efficiency. It's also easily swappable, which is a nice feature.

Installing the GPU is easy but for those not reading instruction: here's already a potential risk, frying your hardware! As soon as you plug in the mains, the PSU turns on and the dock is powered. The power button of the AG02 has no any function, the PSU is always ON and there are always 12V on the PCIe power connectors! In other words: only plug in the mains, after everything is set up and connected.

Here we can see: the power button of the AG02 is OFF but the internal PSU is running and supplying 12V to the GPU - what's also annoying: the PSU fan is always running, even if the dock is not in use. It's not loud but clearly audible.

Like I said, the cables that come with the dock, are only 35cm long - I whish they had included at least 80cm cables ...

Performance wise, I have nothing to complain - here are some benchmarks:

Aoostar GEM10 7840HS via USB4 / External Monitor:

Summery: I think for EUR/USD 150~200 it's a solid, yet not perfect eGPU dock - even if you go DIY you'd probably end up in a similar price range. My major issue with this dock is that it is "always on". If they build in a power button, why not make it work like one? I really hope they will improve this in later revisions.

Pro:
  • solid build quality
  • good performance
  • good quality 800W PSU, suitable even for high-end GPUs
  • Oculink and USB4
  • PSU runs rather quiet under load
Con:
  • it can not be switched ON/OFF
  • PSU (and PSU fan) are always ON as long as AC is connected (possible workaround: remote controlled AC socket?)
  • included cables are wayyyy too short
Hope you found this helpful if you decide to get an eGPU Dock. :)

OK... the NON-working power button really bothered me A LOT... so here's a DIY fix to turn the dock OFF/ON properly!

The GREAT WALL 800W PSU does of course support PSON - AOOSTAR just didn't hook up the power button correctly so that it's not working.

As we can see, PIN A21 does the magic trick:

Once we found the correct PIN on the mainboard, we'll just cut it to let the PSU go to OFF state...

To turn it ON, we will connect the power button between... we need: soldering iron, shrink tube and some piece of cables...

almost done... time to connect the power button (don't forget the locking nut before soldering)...

and voila - we have a working power button to turn the dock properly ON and OFF

Nice fix! Not sure I am brave enough to pull apart the PSU. But I will probably need to because the fan is way too loud! =/

You don't have to take apart the PSU. The mod is done on the eGPU mainboard.

Just pull the PSU out of the dock. Then remove the bottom cover of the dock. Now you can already reach the button and necessary PIN A21 on the mainboard.

I just received mine, and I’m frustrated by how complicated it is to power it on and off. I really admire your clever setup above, but I don’t have the technical knowledge or tools to do something like that.

My question is:
Is it possible to put the laptop connected to the AOOSTAR into sleep or hibernation mode and then resume the session without any issues?

To be honest, I always keep my laptop either in sleep or hibernation mode.

I’m still waiting for my GPU to arrive, so I haven’t been able to test the setup yet.

From what I’ve read so far, it sounds like sleep/hibernation might be tricky with this dock, but I’d really like to know if anyone has it working smoothly.

Sleep/Hibernation doesn't work well with eGPUs in general, it's not an Aoostar specific issue. If you're lucky, it works but if not, just switch your PC OFF/ON completely.

Amazing. Came here to ask if its possible to get a computer on the oculink and a computer on the usb-c to share the GPU. With the Oculink connection, the GPU fans never turn off but USB-C, it does. The Oculink connection seems to take precedence and when both machines are hooked up, the USB C connected pc doesnt detect the card at all.

That is not possible, unless you disconnect the cable of the PC not in use.

I can only agree with the other opinions. You are a hero! But if you turn off the eGPU now, what happens on your PC? Mine shows an error message and restarts. I'm connected over Oculink because I have a 5060 TI.

If you connect over Oculink, you should NEVER switch the eGPU ON or OFF when the PC is still running.

Oculink is not Hot-plug capable!

Always turn your PC OFF before switching the eGPU ON/OFF
