Hi, I have a few questions.

Im currently running an extremely underclocked and undervolted 4790k with hyperthreading disabled, along with an underclocked and undervolted gtx 1060, and while it is stable im looking for more power to get more performance from my parts.

1) if im currently using the hdplex 160DC-ATX, can i add the dynamo 360 in line, or does the in line functionality only work with the dynamo plug in boards.

2) will the hp 230 watt with the 360+160 DC-ATX combo be enough to power an 8400 and a 1060 without significant undervolting and underclocking, and if not will the 330 watt be able to handle an 8600k and a 1060 with maybe a mild cpu overclock?

Hey there,

1.) The Dynamo 360 will work with the HDPlex 160W DC-ATX, but whether or not you will have full functionality will depend on the version of the HDPlex you have. The first version of the HDPlex unit that had the 4 pin Molex plugs (pre winter of 2017) doesn't have one of the safety measures in place that allows for safe use of the sync function. If you don't need the sync cable it should be fine, but if you do then you're going to need to take special care to match the sync cable headers properly or you may damage things.

2.) 230W Dell should be fine for a 65W chip and 1060. 330W will easily handle the 8600K and 1060 as well as reasonable overclock on both the CPU and GPU.

The hdplex unit i have is from late May of 2017, the one featuring the detachable sata strand, and it has the two pins labeled sync near the modular connector for the EPS 4+4 cable. Are there any subtle circuitry features added in winter of 2017 that would affect sync, or do I have a unit that will provide full functionality?

Most systems don't actually require the sync cable, so there is a good chance it won't matter. I am not certain what the pinout on the older model of the 160W DC-ATX is, but I can provide you with the sync pinout for the Dynamo 360. Basically you need the 5V and GND lines on the HDPlex 160W to match those on the 360. If they are reversed it will likely fry the HDPlex 160W DC-ATX. I did this to a couple of older Dynamo samples that were based on the 160W you have when playing with the system which essentially bricked the units. If this does happen then you'd just need to purchase a current gen Dynamo Mini or HDPlex 160W DC-ATX as a replacement. Because the older HDPlex isn't one of my units I can't really provide guarantees that it will work flawlessly. That being said, you likely won't need to use the sync cable rendering this entire concern moot.

Do the 160 and 360 combo both turn on during boot without sync? I may have misunderstood how the sync functionality works.

I am sorry for sounding like such a beginner, I actually have some college level computer engineering courses under my belt, but I'm just having a hard time following the way the system is integrated, and don't want to mess anything up. Thanks

Not a beginner question at all. Depending on the hardware you're running, namely the motherboard and GPU, the units normally turn on and off without the sync cable. Sometimes the GPU will not properly shut down the Dynamo 360 resulting in the continued supply of 12V power back into the motherboard which means your fans and LEDs will stay on. It is for these scenarios that I included the sync cable. What the sync cable does is monitors a 5V power line from the Dynamo Mini and only allows the 360 to stay on when the 5V on the Mini is live (ie. it is supplying 5V power).

Ok so sync forces on/ off on the dynamo if it doesn’t do it itself, and I’m assuming that if you wire the plug in board 5v sync line to the 360 ground sync line, it just shorts on power on and blows up? If this is the issue, I’ll keep an eye out for it. Thanks!

Hi, I have the same issue with all others using HDPLEX 400W. I am very frustrated about my build.
Yesterday I got the genuine Dell power brick but sadly it won't work having i7-8700, z370i MOBO and zotac 1080mini components.

Josh recommend to either get G-unique or use Dynamo 360 + Hdplex 160 DC-DC. I had previously ordered dynamo 360 last May of this year. now, if I buy HDplex 160 DC-DC. What will be the connection between the 2? Sorry for the noob question.

Much appreciated if you can provide on how can I power up my rig s4m using dynamo 360 and hdplex 160 combo.

Thanks A lot,

Hey there,

If you buy the HDPlex 160W DC-ATX it will work perfectly with the Dynamo 360 as they are the same unit. The one difference between the two is that the Dynamo Mini comes with a 4pin to 4pin cable to attach it to the Dynamo 360 while the 160W DC-ATX does not. You can plug the Dynamo 360 into the HDPlex 160W DC-ATX using the 6 pin to 6 pin connector that comes with the Dynamo 360 however.

I have a similar query,
I currently run a 8700 & 1060 with a hdplex 160 and Mean well uhp200-24.
Is it possible that i can add another meanwell (12 or 24V) to the Dynamo 360 and drive the graphics card with it?
Can the sync work between HDplex 160 & Dynamo 360 even if powered individually?

The plan is to upgrade the system to 8700k OC and 1080 mini (Non Ti), with minimal fuss.

If you can’t get the two to sync up, ie power up / down together, you can try a Power Supply Splitter:

Thanks for the reply,
The question was slightly different.
The layout planned is:

1. Meanwell UHP200-24>HDplex 160DC-DC>Motherboard + CPU
^
sync
v
2. Meanwell UHP200-24>Dynamo 360>GPU+SATA.

Is this setup possible?
I’ve done the above before, similar configuration, but with different components:
1. Dell 330w adapter 1 > HDPlex 160 > motherboard and CPU

2. Dell 330w adapter 2 > HDPlex 400 > graphics card

I couldn’t figure out how to sync both of the HDPlex components without the power supply splitter I posted above.

The 5V line on the Mini/160W DC-ATX is an output and on the Dynamo 360 it is a sense line. You can pass any 5V source from the motherboard to the 360 and it will perform the same purpose. Is this a satisfactory answer to your question or did I miss something?
