I bought this aliexpress 16" 2880x1800 120Hz OLED portable monitor around half a year ago for my Asia digital nomad trip, it's been nothing short of amazing, crazy what you can get for $185 USD these days.
However for productivity and coding I often wish for a second or even third monitor, hence this build.
A couple of simple goals for this build that I've set out:
1. at least 1000 px for the short side
2. +/- 10ppi with the main monitor (212ppi)
3. when folded, everything should fit in a 16" laptop case
4. everything should mount on the main boomarm (vesa holes)
5. symmetric, main monitor should to be in the center, secondary screens on the top/bottom/both sides not only 1
6. 60hz and IPS is fine
Since I'm currently staying in Hong Kong for a few weeks which means it is time to taobao, and hopefully a trip to shenzhen at some point to check out the tech malls.
It's insane the amount of extremely specific and niche hardware you can get in China, from display panels to driver boards to really obscure cables and adapters, things that you can think of or you can't think of, they've got it
now #2 has proven to be the most constraining which really limits the display I can get, most of the panels match the ppi for 16" 4k or 16" 2.5k panels but not 16" 3k (mine).
I've scoured hundreds of pages on taobao as well as multiple laptop display lists and I narrowed it down to 2 options:
14" 2560x1600 (215 ppi)
10.1" 1920x1280 (219ppi)
it's either 2x vertical 10.5" or 1x 14" on the bottom
Pros of 14":
Slightly cheaper $70 vs $82
144Hz (don't really care)
lighter overall
1 less cables
1 single monitor is better for videos
Pros of 2x10.5"
Same overall pixel width wise 1280x2=2560, but more vertical pixels (very big)
The extra height gives more tiling options for a lot of apps!! - comfortably open 4 windows on both monitors
More text for terminal and code
Closely matches the height of main monitor
Inspired by DIY perks' video I decided to go with 2 vertical screens, it should look similar to this:
Other things that caught my eye:
Combines power with video out, so only 1x cable per monitor:
Unrelated but everyone should grab one of these if you travel a lot with your PC.. hate those massive dangly wifi/bt antennae.
So far I haven't had any signal issues yet and it's neatly stuck to the back of my PC.
