If I understand correctly, it is specifically because they're hand inserted by someone. It's not the hardware cost, it's the labor cost

Finally got around to updating the OP.
I did all my testing and some photography, and sent a few prototypes to some friends to play around with and gather feedback. Everything seems to fit, although mounting the GPU is difficult. The mounting flange gets in the way of the screwdriver so installing the gpu is cumbersome. though definitely doable.

Next steps are to optimize the design a little bit so its easier to work with.
My main 2 things id like to change right now:
1) GPU mounting. Need to make installing the GPU easier. Probably going to optimize a flange away.
2) Nicer dimensions. In the traditional layout, there is no reason i cant make it also be nice whole mm dimensions, so il try to optimize that in.
There was also some feedback from reddit regarding a low profile gpu bracket. strongly considering that.

2) tweaked it so all exterior dimensions are whole mm increments. The GPU bracket is 56mm x 120mm and the motherboard tray is 56mm x 179mm. Most importantly, when assembled in the traditional layout, the occupied rectangle is even 216mm x 120mm.
3) added mounting points to the motherboard tray on the bottom, to mirror the top.
4) also created a low profile variant for LP GPUs. This should fit into a 10" rack with a 2U height.

I hear you, but its also more flexible this way. Afterall not all cards even require a power connector.Removing the excess part of the bracket is a good idea. I think these sections could be made ~10mm longer so that inexperienced users aren't tempted to install the bracket without leaving the necessary clearance for the gpu install at the edge.
