2400g not working well

Apologies if this is the wrong section, this is my first post here.

I'm running a 2400g in a Geeek A30 with L9a and if I even overclock to say 1000mhz it runs at 60c idle and during games crashes quite often.

I'm using a picopsu 160xt and the 198w external brick. I ran the build open air with a 250w atx psu and I could clock to 1500mhz and cpu 3.9g.

Now I can't overclock at all without it failing. Without overclocking YouTube is a bit choppy and the video goes grey and messed up if I scroll the video.

Any ideas? What do you think is messing it up? The case? The psu? I thought the pico would handle overclocking okay.

Later I'll try it without the case but I was curious what the much more knowledgeable people on here think.

Thanks!

What i am suspecting is overheating. Idle temperatures are WAY too high. Best thing to do is check your TIM application and re-seat cooler.

Also, how much did your push the OC? That may be the reason. Try to bring everything to stock settings and test your PC then.

We recently have had someone had unexpectedly high temperatures, it was the heatsink (NH-L9a or L9i I think as well) not making proper contact because it was put on in the wrong orientation. Check that the heatsink doesn't sit atop a component that's around the CPU socket.

A Ryzen 2400G shouldn't be a problem with an L9a, although overclocking requires aditional voltage and thus additional cooling and power.

I had a slightly higher idle/operating temperature on my 2400g and it ended up being not enough thermal paste, so definitely check that. Also, you won't be able to overclock it much, they aren't super great at overclocking.

I'd like to update by saying it's fixed! I spent all day trying all different voltages and settings in the BIOS and after much trial-and-error (the CPU went up to 114 degrees in one stress test) I've managed to get it running well at a good temperature. Undervolting saves the day! Specifically getting the CPU down from 1.45 to 1.3 volts.
Thanks a lot for your replies, I wasn't expecting such fast, helpful responses. I checked everything you mentioned and I'm grateful for this community :)

I'm curious what board you're using and what your settings are. I didn't have much success playing with voltages, but I'm a super noob at overclocking

Good for you for solving the problem buddy, but I'll have to warn you - it might not be a good idea to overclock on such a small cooler in a small case to add, in the long term. I'm talking about your hardware's longevity.

On another note, youtube being choppy at stock is definitely not right imo. How much ram do you have? How much are you allocating to the gpu? Driver version? Monitor size?

YouTube can be choppy even when the CPU is too hot/near TJ Max. It used to happen all the time for me when my TIM dried out. When replaced with new TIM, the CPU was much cooler and youtube became smooth again.

Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread but I am having the same issues with the same CPU and cooler. Starcraft 2 at medium settings and 1080p makes computer crash altogether after about 4 minutes of play. Even just watching YouTube brings temps up to 60-65C. Running everything stock, no overclocking.

What is the proper orientation for this cooler (Noctua L9a-AM4)? It "fits" both pointing up and pointing down (the 2 small needles/screws/pointy things sticking out of one side of the heatsink). Should they point towards or away from PCIe?

Some updates:

YouTube 1080p now holds at around 35-40C.
Starcraft 2 seems to be working better now, just played for 1 hour without issues and holding at around 50-60C.
Tried a few other games where Pharao (old game) works perfectly fine for 3 hours of play and World of Warcraft also works fine for leveling (haven't tried dungeons or raids yet).

What I did:
  • Installed latest BIOS, v.0601
  • No overclocking at all, everything is stock
  • Only BIOS settings I've changed are forcing the IGPU as GFX and bumping GFX memory to 2GB
  • Installed latest "Radeon Settings" (i.e. AMD drivers), v. 18.5.1
  • Disabled FreeSync and virtual super resolution in Radeon Settings
  • Installed the latest Windows 10, v.1803
I also ran both Unigine Valley and Heaven at Extreme HD, no issues.
In addition to this, I ran AIDA64 stress tests on CPU, cache and memory for 10 minutes with no issues as well as stress tests on GPU separately, also for 10 minutes with no issues.

Some things I'm still kinda concerned about is that whenever loading a new webpage, temperature shoots up to like 50~C while loading - then backs down to 35~C again after page has loaded. Is that normal? Still wondering if my cooler is mounted correctly..

I get those random spikes, too, so if anything, at least we're both in the same boat XDXDXD
Ryzen is considered relatively young so like any young system, first thing to do is to check for bios and chipset driver updates. AMD just updated their chipset driver last April. I don't know how it fares on the Ryzen 5, but my 2700X temp constantly jumps up +- 10 degrees every 10 seconds... Might have something to do installing the 2700X on my Asrock AB350 ITX though.

I also noticed you're using single channel memory. Go dual channel, it will improve your graphics performance considerably.

Here is an example about power draw, and thus heat, toward voltage and frequency.

This is for a 1800X but applies to any CPU....

Before I overclocked, my FPS in games were crazily sporadic. Even something like League of Legends was going from 60fps to 140 to 30. It was very unstable when let to adjust itself automatically. The main reason I wanted to 'overclock' (and it's my first time ever doing so) was to set static values for things so they might be a little more consistent, rather than getting more power. Since I set the APU to 1500mhz (or 1300mhz or anything) the FPS remains a lot more consistent.

Also, to answer others who were interested in the rest of my build, here is everything:
CPU: Ryzen 2400g
Cooler: Noctua L9a
RAM: Avexir Blitz 2x4GB 3200mhz
PSU: PicoPSU 160XT & bundled 198w brick
Motherboard: Gigabyte AB350N Gaming WiFi
SSD: Crucial MX300 275gb M.2
Case: Geeek A30

I'm trying to get this build to be as stable as possible because I'm going to give it away to my girlfriend. Hopefully it's good now. Seems stable at 1.3 volts. What's the best stress test software to test stability?

I'm still getting those random spikes of 10 degrees when seemingly doing nothing demanding.

I also encountered 1 time where the computer froze all together while watching YouTube Screen just froze and sound started looping. Only happened once yet so I'd say I'm running fairly stable at stock settings. We'll see if it happens again.

Next thing I'm going to try is enabling the XMP profile on the memory and see if that also runs stable - should provide a nice boost to graphics performance!
