SilverStone’s PCIe to M.2 Range Expands

TechPowerup recently revealed that Silverstone has launched two of their PCIe to M.2 adapters – the ECM23 and ECM25. While we saw these at Computex 2018, it’s great to see them finally ready for retail. The ECM23 is a stylish interpretation of the concept, with an included heatsink. The card uses a full length x16 slot – although only x4 lanes are wired in. Supporting 2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280 M-Key M.2 form factors, the ECM23 supports all PCIE AHCI/NVMe SSDs – SATA variants need not apply. The ECM25 is the no-nonsense variant, fitting in an x4 slot (or larger). …

Gigabyte Launches M.2 NVMe SSDs

Gigabyte, already members of the SSD market, has broadened their range, adding a few M.2 NVMe drives to their lineup. Available in 128 and 256GB sizes at launch, with 512GB coming later, the 2280 form factor drives offer you another choice in the M.2 market. The advantages of the M.2 form factor family is already well known within our community (no cables, small size, etc), so the usual marketing spiel on this isn’t needed here. However, one thing to note is the speeds offered by these drives – the 128GB drive is slower than the 256GB unit – 1200 MB/s read …

Samsung releases 970 EVO and PRO M.2 NVMe SSDs

Today Samsung revealed the new iteration of their well known and top performing PCIe M.2 NVMe SSD lineup, with the 970 series continuing to claim top performance once again. As with the 960 lineup, the new sticks of awesome come in a PRO and EVO variant, once again differentiating in 2-bit and 3-bit MLC flash memory. This results in slightly better theoretical performance for the PRO, although reviews stressing these drives to their limits often reveals more than those single digit percentages say. The larger difference is in double the write endurance for the PRO vs the EVO model, making …

Samsung’s SSD predictions 2016

At the recent Samsung Global SSD Summit 2016 in Seoul Korea, Samsung showed off new products like the 960 PRO/EVO but they also made some predictions about the future of the solid state market over the next few years. Tom’s Hardware has a great overview of the presentation. Most of it is the typical talk about how SSDs are a rapidly growing market, cost per GB of capacity is dropping, larger capacity drives are getting more popular as they get cheaper, SSDs are pushing out hard drives in the mobile and enterprise markets, and so on. Samsung Announces the 960 PRO and 960 EVO

The Global SSD Summit is currently in progress and Samsung has kicked it off with a bang, announcing the 960 PRO and 960 EVO M.2 drives. AnandTech has a great overview of the new drives, but basically they’re both smoking fast PCIe NVME drives, with the 960 PRO clocking in at 3500MB/s sequential read and 2100MB/s write while the 960 EVO comes in at “only” 3200MB/s read and 1900MB/s write. The new drives feature the same Polaris controller (no relation to the recently released Radeons) as the OEM-oriented SM961 that preceded them. For NAND, they both feature Samsung’s new 48-layer V-NAND, with the PRO using MLC and …

Samsung SM961 close to shipping: Up to 1TB and 3200MB/s

Historically, Samsung’s OEM solid state drives were not worth much attention from PC enthusiasts since they were tuned for reliability and price more than performance. That changed a few years ago with the XP941 and then later the SM951, OEM M.2 drives that delivered much higher performance than any other consumer drive on the market at the time. Later Samsung released a consumer drive with comparable performance with the 950 Pro but now they’re once again raising the performance bar with a new OEM drive, the Samsung SM961. Like the 950 Pro, the SM961 is a NVME PCIe 3.0 x4 drive …
