News is Light: Enjoy The Worst Set-Top Box of My Life

Oh the 1990’s. Everyone got obsessed with the term “multimedia”. What was it? I still have no clue, but damn it we had to have it. Behold the 1990 small form factor set-top box that would define everything that was wrong with the multimedia concept; the Phillips CD-i. Powered by customized Motorola 68000 called the Phillips 68070 at a whopping who-cares-about-the-speed-this-thing-sucked-MHz, this CD spinning monstrosity was the bane of kids existence. Want a Genesis, SNES, or PC? No says the parent who watched the infomercial. This machine is “educational”.

It taught me to hate.

The YouTube video below? That was the 30 minute totally-not-a-cult infomercial that flooded my local cable network. Since my TV had a slide rail channel changer that made a ton of noise, and I wasn’t supposed to be watching TV late at night, I had to endure this indoctrination video too many times to remember. It was this or home shopping network back then. Sometimes, I choose the latter.

So suffer with us who grew up in the 80’s and 90’s, and watch…THE WALL.

The CD-i is the reason I purposely avoided the first PlayStation lol. What a mistake that was.

The heady days of early multimedia/'smart' boxes. Is nostalgia still the right term if we never ever want to relive those experiences?
