All credit to Tom’s Hardware for getting a statement from Phison regarding E26 powered NVME SSDs shutting down. In an article posted by Zhiye Liu, Phison is stating that all of their partners E26 based PCIe 5.0 NVME drives must have a heatsink. While many have been sold as bare drives, Phison stated to Tom’s Hardware that the bare drives are for users to use their existing cooling products. While selling bare drives may sound strange to some people, it really isn’t. Many motherboards include some form of M.2 cooling. In the ITX world, often this is active cooling combined with the chipset. Many users prefer or must use their motherboards solution for cooling their M.2 drives.
The E26 controller allows for blistering speeds at the cost of blistering heat. Do not place it on the rear of your motherboard. Additionally, make sure you check its temps to ensure it’s working properly and always try to design good airflow into your build. If your still getting SSD based lock ups or shut downs, check to make sure your GPU isn’t exhausting heat directly onto the M.2 slot.

If you’re unsure if your PCIe 5.0 NVME SSD has the Phison E26, and there aren’t many that don’t right now, here is a list directly from Phison of partners using it.
