What do you guys think of a case layout like this?

It's a fairly good layout , though needs a ribbon riser of reasonable length.
The Hutzy cases are using it

Agree, it's a fairly proven layout at this point. The deciding factor will be the implementation of the case.

Trying to come up with some awesome layout that's never been done before is a lost cause.

What will make it great or not will be the details: features, how easy it is to build in, how it looks, size, flexibility, etc.

Yeah, my main goal is performance per liter. I just don't want to use the exact same design as the Dan Case or something as I feel I'm not actually innovating.

When you get really small, thermal management becomes a large issue. If you can come up with some novel ways to handle the heat generated, that in itself would be extremely innovative.

Two things I see going for this case in terms of volume are the placement of the DC PSU below the card. I'm assuming that the case will be only for DC PSUs with an optional power brick.

Pros to this layout: no wasted space. Cons: would be restricting to taller cards like the Gigabyte 1070 mini.

One thing I'd like to see and just brainstorming in my head is swappable backplates for accommodating different GPU setups, to handle different compromises.

So for a normal height card, you can use a backplate that places the card close to the top, with at least 50mm of room in the bottom for the HD-PLEX or whatever other DC board you want to use. For extra-tall cards, a different backplate that positions the card lower so as to allow room for the taller cooler and PCB, and DC power will be limited to plug-in boards on the 24-pin of the motherboard.

You would be innovating enough.

Dan Case is nice, but I myself would have liked it better if it were more like yours. Made for a short GPU and an HDPLEX 300w or Pico styled plug. That would have cut the size down even further. And with 1080 Mini being a thing now... there's almost no reason not to go with a short card. Unless you want a Titan.

I feel the layout is worth doing.

I was considering just having the GPU and CPU take in air from vents placed in front of them, but that is too mainstream.

Great, I am now considering moving the HD PLEX to be adjacent to the motherboard RAM DIMMs so that it can support taller GPUs and there is less cable clutter.

Unfortunately, there isn't much more you can do to with this combination of parts. Any ideas?

I've heard the same thing now for 7 years.

Check out my website. My art project is doing a different layout and building it every year.

I can also tell you concretely that there are at least two layouts for these components that are unique and not been done yet--AND increase layout efficiency from what has been done (and done well).

Keep at it!

Trying to come up with some awesome layout that's never been done before is a lost cause.

If I believed that my passion would die.

*edit*

Also, I don't believe you. You are one of the most talented persons I know in the realm of layout. Or maybe you are saying it is impossible because you have already come up with all of them. That, I believe. ;)

Looks good. You may want to consider moving the GPU down...a lot of GPU's now are taller than the reference height.

I guess I should have been a bit more inclusive. But I'm firmly of the opinion that ignoring a good layout just because someone else has done it is stupid.

Pretty much any basic layout that doesn't go extreme with PCIe extenders has been done in a custom case, mod, or even just speculative sketches. And that's just the reality of fitting together a bunch of standardized parts, there's only so many combinations of arrangements that make sense.

But just look at the car industry, most cars on the road consist of just a few different basic arrangements of wheels, engine, transmission, seats, etc. But within those constraints, they vary greatly in the implementation.

Likewise, using a part layout that's been done before doesn't preclude a case from greatness, it's all about the details.
