I have the Kraken x62in my SM580, so I know it fits for sure. The 280mm radiator has 30+% more surface area for heat transfer than a 240mm radiator... it’s a large improvement. Probably not 30% better, but better cooling for sure.
Received my SM550 the other day and I have to say I love this case. I was always a fan of the looks and design and it looks even better in person. Really well made, feels like a tank. Currently I am using the Wrath Spire until I receive my ID Cooling IS 60. I had been using a Steck with this build but I like the SM550 due to the better ventilated side panels, front IO and ability to mount 120mm fans. I was able to reuse most of my custom cables from pslate except for the SATA power cable which was too short, hopefully he will open up orders again soon.

Shoot, sorry on this one - this was actually a 3600X system that was in the email I have, person was considering a 3700X which is what got me confused.
Kraken X62 is my recommendation for the SM580.
Yeah I was thinking that because my 3700x runs hot in my Ghost S1 with a LH-12.
Compared to the 2700 I was on these are HOT chips even when rated the same TDP which is a shame.
Higher density in the 7nm process leads to harder to cool chips at the same TDP as the thermal density increases.
By simple math, 120x240mm is 28800 square millimeters and 140x280 is 39200 square millimeters which is 36% more surface area (not counting the fan hubs, but the fan hubs subtract the same amount from both) so depending on a number of other factors, it could be a significant change in potential cooling power. Be aware of diminishing returns: On a non-overclocked 55 watt chip, not as much. On an overclocked 100 watt chip, it will be a bigger change.
140mm fans are also more performant than 120mm, particularly when noise or rotation speed normalized. Even Noctua's A12x25 aren't quite as good as the best 140mm fans (and their 140mm sterrox redesign should be amazing when they come out in 2021). Choosing 280mm over 240mm AIO gives a worthwhile increase in cooling performance, more so than the jump after that to 360mm.

Indeed, a 140x280mm radiator is almost as performant (<10% delta) as a 120x360mm radiator, and requires one less fan therefore less noise is created.
Thank you. I have to agree, I understand why people are attracted to the larger cases but I really like the look of the 550/560.

My attention was just drawn to this case via reddit (560 actually but I'm seriously eyeing the 550). My needs are small case, very very quiet, the more CPU power the better, I am OK with whatever GPU I can. So um do you think it'd two Noctua F-12 , the Silverstone 450W passive SFX-L and a fanless cooler (which?) could carry a 3700X in a SM550 ? Plus a fanless GT1030 or maaaaybe https://www.quietpc.com/palit-ne5105t018g1-1070h this thing? It's "only" 142mm tall and the 550 is 155mm tall compatible I just dunno about the heat...

You know, I just finished my custom loop in my o11 Dynamic not long ago but I'm already lusting after a custom loop in the SM580...
Woot, monitor ordered and my pslate cables arrived! time to get this pile of parts moving. gotta paint the 580 first. been slacking on it.
Is the 55mm width for CPU coolers only achievable with a vented side panel? I'm looking at using this but I have no idea if it's compatible or not...it's an Apogee Drive II clone on taobao that's 55mm tall and idk if it'll work.

You would need to use low-profile 90 degree rotary fittings in place of the green ones they show in the early pictures. The AD II issue was the fittings and the tubes coming off of them would interfere with the case panel, rather than the pump itself being the problem. Looking at that beast, as long as the tubes could route out without kinking it probably should fit. But those tall green fittings look like they would be an issue, however in later pictures they show them removed so that should mean you could fit very short turns there.Is the 55mm width for CPU coolers only achievable with a vented side panel?
