SFF.Network SilverStone at CES 2017: Power Supplies

Our very own Drew Duncan is currently Las Vegas at CES 2017 and his first meeting of the show was with Tony Ou, the marketing manager at SilverStone. SilverStone is one of the few big case and PSU companies that has really thrown their weight behind SFF so it’s always exciting to see what they have in store.

That TFX supply is good to see coming from Silverstone. I hope they can make the same progress with TFX as they did with SFX. Even if it was only half, that would be amazing.

It's nice to see they finally switched to 92mm fans and a wire grille instead of the crappy stamped grille. Lets hope they get the fan curve right this time.

Sort of a bizarre mirror with BeQuiet here: BeQuiet's SFX supplies are 80+ Bronze with stamped inlets while Silverstone's are now all Gold (or higher) with wire grills, while BeQuiet's 300W TFX unit is Gold with a wire grill and Silverstone's is Bronze with a stamped inlet!

The final versions of the 500 and 650 will get stamped housing grills but it's far less restrictive than the Lian-Li 750 stamped grill.
Their current fan grills stick out passed the dimensions of the housing and they couldn't recess them without hitting the fan.

All clear fans have been changed to black as they received multiple support calls that their fans where "wobbling" - an illusion created by the spinning of clear fans in the light.

The smaller power button may appear in a later revision of the SFX800 but it's not pressing and as a result, it's a "maybe".
If the SX800 sells well, they will bump the capacity up to the next level. They said that will the new power button and the new efficiency found in the 650 watt unit, they could easily take the SFX-L platform much higher.

They have no plans of selling a SFX 800 and SFX 800 w/ standard length cables. The cable kit will only be offered as an option.

They don't have plans to make SFX exclusive cases but SFX is selling well for them and they plan to add a few more SFX units within the range.

Outside of their first two SFX units, no units will ever come with the ATX to SFX conversion bracket. They would rather exclude it to save most customers $10.

Don't they already have SFX-only ranges in the RVZ- series, CS- series, FTZ- series, DS- series, later model ML- series, etc? Or were they referring to non-ITX (i.e. mATX, ATX) cases with SFX-only PSU support?

I think some of those "SFX" should have read "SFX-L", Drew has a bad habit of conflating the two :p

I've talked with Tony via email before CES about mATX/ATX cases designed around SFX/SFX-L and it's something they'll consider if their system integrator customers demand it but they don't plan to otherwise.

I'm not sure where the next level is beyond the 800W SFX-L. It already matches the power density at boost (823W/l) as the 650W SFX (819W/l).
Only the FSP flex-atx gear is better for power density.
Could they actually be going for 1000W/l?

SilverStone positions its new Nitrogon-series cooler (SST-NT08-115XP) as a companion for its VT01 Mini-STX chassis, but the device can naturally be used for all the other ultra-thin PCs as well. In fact, the SST-NT08-115XP can be attached to any motherboard with Intel’s LGA1150/1151/1155/1156 socket, but in the vast majority of cases it will be used inside current-gen machines that are based on Intel’s Skylake or Kaby Lake processors in LGA1151 packaging.
