So I recieved the metalfish s3 plus case from taobao and it's so good looking. Suffice to say my pc was booting before moving to the new case. Now I get a red cpu light on my asus rog x470itx mobo with my 1700. No booting no video output. I also have an asrock ab350 with a 2200g. So I tried hooking everything up to the ab350, gpu including as the 1700 isnt an apu and I get nothing as well, that board doesnt have any lights to tell me what's wrong. So I tried the 2200g in the x470 with and without gpu and I get nothing. The 2200g works fine on the ab350 so I know that one isnt bad. Both mobos have current bios so I know the x470 should boot with the 2200g.

So is it possible that I shorted the socket on the x470 as well as the 1700?

I need to figure out if I can buy just the cpu, just the mobo or do i need both?

Also tried 3 different power supply, arch demon, silverstone sx500g and an old cheap 550

If the CPU won't work in a second motherboard and the motherboard won't work with a second CPU (and both test parts are known good) it does indeed sound like you have somehow managed to kill both your CPU and motherboard. Have you checked for any bent/broken pins on the 1700? Or for any dirt or debris in the socket? Have you tried resetting the CMOS on the X470 board? Did anything out of the ordinary happen when disassembling/assembling the build? Any drops, dings, components removed without disconnecting the PSU, etc.?

Nope everything went normal, I didnt even pull the cpu until it didnt work so there would have been no way to bend a pin moving from case to case. Jumped cmos and unplugged battery

Next step should I buy a 3700x and x570 itx or just get a new x470 itx? I'll buy the 3700x first to see if it will take on my board. The asus x470i is around 200 and the x570i gigabyte or asrock aren't much more

The only reason to get the Asrock is if you're really set on having Thunderbolt. Otherwise you lose out on m.2 slots, which is not worth it. With the Asus X470 you downgrade the PCIe slot to x8, but that doesn't really matter for performance, but it's something you don't have to worry about with the Gigabyte X570.
