In the interest of storage (m.2)

My Asrock X370 motherboard is described as having

1 x Ultra M.2 Socket, supports M Key type 2280 M.2 SATA3 6.0 Gb/s module and M.2 PCI Express module up to Gen3 x4 (32 Gb/s) (with Ryzen Series CPU) or Gen3 x2 (16 Gb/s) (with A-Series APU)* *Supports NVMe SSD as boot disks

The question is... right now I have 2 500GB sats SSD. (Crucial MX and Kingston something)
I've seen some 1TB and 2TB SSD m.2 drives that would fit my build much better.
Question is, which to go for? And are they still good speeds once you go for that size?
Or go for a smaller m.2 and some sort of external storage that can sit on my shelf? What solutions do you people have?

if you got that match dow to blow then go for it :D

The performance is the same across all 960 PROs (3.500MB/s read and 2.100MB/s write)

Just remind yourselves that you let >10% free for S.M.A.R.T to cache.

....also the drives get quiet Hot if you use them heavily.



A NAS is always an option as long as you got a hard wire going to it at Gigabit speed.

the easiest solution would be a WD My Cloud

They are almost the same in the 960 Pro but like most SSDs, the smaller storage sizes are less performant: link
  • RANDOM WRITE (4KB, QD32)
    512 GB: Up to 330,000 IOPS (Thread 4)
    1024 GB: Up to 360,000 IOPS (Thread 4)
    2048 GB: Up to 360,000 IOPS (Thread 4)
  • RANDOM READ (4KB, QD32)
    512 GB: Up to 330,000 IOPS (Thread 4)
    1024 GB: Up to 440,000 IOPS (Thread 4)
    2048 GB: Up to 440,000 IOPS (Thread 4)

Just remind yourselves that you let >10% free for S.M.A.R.T to cache.
You mean 10% overprovisioning (unformatted, outside of a volume), because S.M.A.R.T. and "cache" are two completely different and unrelated functions. Almost all modern SSDs have a good garbage collection system in place along with unassignable storage for overprovisioning. As long as an SSD doesn't get filled much over 90%, you're not going to be able to notice it.

1.) that's true but not that as significant :)

2.) that's what I meant, a good amount of spare cells and that the controller dose not have to erase the existing cells over and over again for a single Bit.

...the Cache is a RAM chip for the controller to collect incoming data.

I didn't mean to suggest I have a load of money going spare "to blow" but I would like to know the options at all price points.
