My portable system is actually a NUC, (one of the i5 kaby lake model). And I too like to choose my own portable display, keyboard, mouse, etc.

I even got a MAXOAK battery pack to make it portable/battery powered with DC/DC connection.

SO it can be a lot of fun, but for overall performance/value it isn't quite there, but it seems like you have other things you value more (cooling quality, build quality etc.) so can't fault you for that.

What is your combination of keyboard and display? Do you not run into issues battery powering your Nuc and no power on your display ( or is it one of those from external Asus screens with a powered usb c ).

I use a GeChic 1503H and a bluetooth logitech keyboard and mouse. I use HDMI for my display, which is powered by two usb cables I plug into the NUC. Everything is powered by the battery pack, with no issues, even while running 3D games like WoW on low-ish settings.

EDIT: Here is a picture of it while using my backlit mechanical keyboard and wired mouse:

FYI, I just got home from some travel and assembled my NUC8I7HVK. Chucked 32GB and RAM and a 970 Pro NVME SSD in there. My plan is to use it almost exclusively as a Linux workstation. So far:
  • Fan spins up aggressively, seems to rattle at a certain frequency then goes away? Not super happy about the noise characteristics. I've disabled turbo and set it to "Quiet" fan profile to see if it helps. Seems to idle at about 70C...
  • I am using Arch, and after doing most of an install (linux 4.16.13-2, mesa 18.1.1-1, xf86-video-amdgpu 18.0.1-2) I get a blank screen for Xorg - might just leave it until 4.18/18.2 for official Kaby Lake G support.
The thing is very small in volume, although definitely heavier than it looks. I'm still on the fence on what (if anything) I'll use it for.
