Thank you. Could you recommend any alternative solutions? Would it be safe to do a test connecting the GPU to 12VDC and see if it handles it ok?

Sure, you can try connecting the GPU directly to 12VDC and see how it works... or if you have a AC/DC PSU with ON/OFF trigger maybe use that function...
