External USB(3.0-3.1) vs SATA

Hi, I wonder if I will lose some performance of write and read when using a USB external drive instead of SATA?
To avoid a thermal issue in S4M with 1080ti. I already have 860 500gb and FireCuba 2TB hybrid 2.5", which mainly used to store games, movies and such.

You will depending on the external enclosure and chipset used on the motherboard for USB 3.0/3.1, but the difference will probably be negligible or not noticable for a spinning disk
