So what are the differences with these machines and how a higher volume CNC part would be produced for a consumer product? What I'm really getting at is, would it be possible to get to a point where you can produce parts reliably with little to no supervision, if you really took the time to refine the routine?

For example it took me a few revisions and many failed prints before I could print one of my 3D parts without supervision, but now after getting the settings dialed in, it can be created reliably. Is that a fair comparison?

well depends on what you have to do I guess. You most likely have to change the end mill, multiple times, unless you buy a system that automatically exchanges the end mill (and possibly the collet).

if you just need to cut, it's relatively painless, but if you do something wrong with a 3d printer you just end up with some spaghetti... with a CNC you can do so serious damage :) Especially to the small end mills...

Anyhow, while I feel completely comfortable at leaving a 3d printer on at night while I sleep, I would never do that with a CNC router.
