Boo!

Shuttle SN78SH7 user saying hello! I was pointed this direction by Tatty_One on Techpowerup, where I've been a member for a few years, as I'm trying to track down a single slot upgrade to a HD7750 which is not finding it easy to game at 1920x1080 res' paired up with a Phenom II x3 720 at 3.4GHz. I'll have a duke round the site now and try to get inspired while I'm here!

Welcome to the forum, Rhythmeister! :)

Decent single-slot graphics cards are disappointingly uncommon in the market - I recall hearing of a GTX 970 that was single-slot, but a cursory search isn't pulling up anything (though I'm behind a very restrictive firewall, which doesn't help much).

I suspect that other members may be more knowledgeable here, though! I've never needed to shop around for a single-slot card before, so I only know what I've stumbled upon in the news.

Cheers Phoenix, I've spotted the GTX 650 and 750 Ti models but I can't find a retailer outside Japan and I don't speak Japanese :( Even an R7 260 would do the job in single slot but no major manufacturers seem to use single slot heatsinks anymore

Welcome!

The only single-slot 750Ti that was produced (KFA² GTX 750Ti Razor) seems to be discontinued by now.

The next fastest single-slot card I know of is the Gainward GeForce GTX 750 (Single-Slot). It's also available in a 2GB version, but that might be discontinued as well.

AMD has the R7 250E as their most current offer in the consumer market. All other options from both the green and red team are professional cards in the Quadro and FirePro series, which give you much less bang for your buck.

If you don't fear cooler-swapping, this might be of interest for you: http://www.overclock.net/t/1300645/official-usff-sff-club/1750#post_24217834
Getting a regular 750Ti and just putting the cooler of a defunct Quadro on it doesn't seem like the worst idea.

The Radeon R9 Nano is also available as a single-slot when using watercooling, the highest performing card that could be made into single-slot at the moment.

I'm more than prepared to swap the heatsink with an older card with similar TDP, I just got outbid on a Zotac GTX 750 Ti so I'll keep sniping on fleabay!
Can anyone here confirm the mounting hole spacing on the GTX 750 Ti for me?

In my Shuttle of yore, I circumvented the single-slot GPU issue by using this:

It's discontinued for a while now, but the idea is still solid. There also used to be a better cooler in the same way, the Thermalright HR-03 Plus, but it's also discontinued. Maybe someone knows a cooler like this that's still being offered ? Than you'd just have to look for GPUs with all video-out ports on one slot.

Hmm, maybe this heatsink would do the job? http://www.kastl-gmbh.de/product_in...DRO-K2200-4GB-38041992-S26361-D3000-V220.html

It's a 68W TDP apparently, it SHOULD be grand on a low profile card with a quiet 60mm fan on top blowing down on it I suspect :thumb:

Jup, that should work. Those seven additional watts on the 750Ti are not going to ruin it. (hopefully)
With additional airflow, you should be golden. Maybe put small heatsinks on all small components that could get hot, and you should be golden.

That is a really cool idea, I didn't know this was a thing. Could work especially well when the single slot that is available to you is directly above the motherboard. A single fan between this and the CPU cooler could work a treat.

Especially for SFF it's a nice solution, as it allows flexibility in the card's location in relation to the PCIe connector. Because you can place the cooling on another side of the card. But I don't know any that are still made.

I've never seen that before. That's actually really clever, even if the idea behind it is simple enough.

I tried to find some, but all there is are a few cards from before 2007 that were stock passive cards, the reference designs to which were single-slot anyway.

If the block that attaches to the GPU core is seperable or is orientation-independent, you could also switch it around so it could go in the front OR back of the card. Think air-cooled SLI.

You'd think that these would be in more demand nowadays, too, given the trajectory of computer size since then :p Though the supported wattage is a bit low even for most of nVidia's GPUs.

Are there any available cards at retail that employ this sort of cooler design?

Can't remember the name, but I used to have a cooler than came off at a 90 degree angle from the card, so you could have it sitting over the CPU cooler.

Of course, much of the single slot problem is the IO at the back. DVI just won't die, and still takes up a second slot on many newer cards.

Thanks for all the info and ideas folks, you've got my brain going here! I THINK I'll be going for a GT210 heatsink which features a Cu core and single heatpipe but I'll have to grind away some material from the non fan end so as not to foul components. I've plenty of Thermalright Cu heatsinks and thermal tape sitting in my toolbox from the good old ATi 9800 Pro overclocking days just waiting for a GTX 750 Ti 2GB

If you have a huge stack of money to throw around, the Quadro M4000 is effectively a single-slot air-cooled GTX 970 with a slower clock speed (780MHz vs. 1250MHz for the core, 6GHz vs 7GHz for the RAM). Or maybe you could weasel a cooler out of Nvidia to put on a downclocked 970.
