I think I have this finally working with Linux Mint. Initially had problems with the display and had to use nomodeset to boot. I ended upgrading the BIOS to 3.20 and then used ukuu to upgrade kernel to 5.1. It has taken me a while because things have changed quite a bit since I last messed around with linux, a decade or more ago.
The configuration has 2x16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX and a 2TB Intel 660P NVMe under the board. I got the 2200GE from eBay. It was recognized by the BIOS with no problem. For cooling I am using @Stevo_ idea of the AMD stealth heatsink with the plastic spacers and the Titan fan discussed in another thread. I am not sure how it will perform under load but for now it's doing the job.
