News Coffee Lake variant including on-package Vega GPU

Combines a Core-H CPU part (45W) with an as yet unspecified semi-custom Vega Polaris GPU plus at least one HBM2 stack. Uses Intel's EMIB rather than a monolithic interposer, but appears to be doing so just for the GPU-HBM link rather than for the CPU-GPU link judging by the mockup image provided...

Rumor Hades Canyon: upcoming NUC with dGPU support?!

Via CNX. With support for what appears to be a full power -K CPU, Optane, Thunderbolt, and a dGPU. Maybe Intel took note of what certain individuals have done with Skull Canyon and 5x5/STX boards and GPUs.

GPU Desktop GP100 card breaks cover

While the GP100 chip has shown up on a PCIe interface before that was in the Tesla P100, a pure compute card with no external interface. Now Anandtech are reporting the Quadro GP100, a PCIe GP100 based card with video outputs (4x DP + DVI-D DL). While not immediately applicable for SFF...

    Subscription bug

Silver subscriber renewal was coming up, so I made the jump up to Gold subscriber before Silver auto-renewed. This has resulted in becoming some sort of fabled Double Subscriber* as far as Xenforo is aware. Should there be a flag to auto-cancel lower subscription tiers if a new one is purchased...

Power Supply Redundant PSU modules for high power internal AC -> 12V?

Reading PCPer's review of a redundant PSU, a line jumped out at me: Each of those FSP520-20RGGBB1 modules is a 520W 92% efficienct single-rail 12V supply, feeding via a card-edge connector (AKA nice big solder pads that sadly lack strain-relief). While FSP don't publish the dimensions of the...

News GALAX Unveil single-slot GTX 1070 Katana

Pictures here Single slot, blower cooler, appears to be based on an ITX-length PCB (though GALAX do not appear to be offering an ITX-length GTX 1070 at this time). Sadly the DVI port didn't get axed, so it has a paltry 1x DVI-D (not even DVI-I!), 1x DP, and 1x HDMI.

    Reduce minimum search length limit?

Not sure if this is a Xenforo limitation, but can the minimum search term length be removed, or at least reduced to three characters? Everyone loves their TLAs, and the current limit prevents you from searching for such terms as: SFX, ITX, '960 Evo', '1TB m.2', and so on.

News Seagate announces high-capacity (up to 5TB) non-SMR 2.5" HDDs

From Toms Hardware. Up to 2TB 2.5" drives in 7mm Z-height, and 3TB-5TB in 15mm Z-height. Up until now, high-capacity 2.5" HDDs have been using SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) which has a dramatic and detrimental effect on random write speeds (or any write speed on a drive containing data) and...

News Thermaltake Engine 27 (production Coolchip kinetic cooler)

Thermaltake have finally announced the production heatsink to come out of their collaboration with Coolchip. Unfortunately it's only rated for 70W TDP at 13-25 dBA, which doesn't compare favourably with the NH-L9i (95W, 23.6dB) unless you really need those extra 10mm (27mm height vs. 37mm with...

Confirmation of Earth-like planet in orbit around Proxima Centauri's Habitable Zone

ESO Press release This is really incredible news. While the planet is not likely to be particularly hospitable due to the likelihood of tidal locking and the proximity to Proxima Centauri bathing it in radiation, it is still not only one of the most Earth-like exoplanets discovered thus far...

    Laing D4/D5 impeller/rotor.

Picked up a Laing D4 for a non-PC watercooling project, but it looks like the bearing surface in the rotor is off-centre causing the rotor to vibrate in operation. Does anyone have a donor rotor from a dead pump?

News Seagate announce 2TB Nytro Enterprise m.2 SSD

From Anandtech. The existing XM1440 series m.2 SSDs are NVME so I would expect the 2TB version to be also. Pricing is unannounced, and these are not drives aimed at the consumer so will likely be difficult to get a hold of.

Low-profile cable (and liquid) routing plane

While the case is not SFF, the idea seems like it would be well suited for SFF. Laying cables into a routed channel is certainly going to be easier than traditional cable-lacing, and doing so without sleeving will cut down the Z-height even further. The inclusion of liquid routing may be less...

Interview with Michael Hooper (Corsair's PM for cases) on SFF case design

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2016/03/08/corsair-interview-michael-hooper/1 Some interesting stuff there, particularly Corsair's intent to make smaller, more 'modular' cases (e.g. install a 3.5" drive Or a long GPU) due to their need to target a large chunk of the ITX market to keep sales...

    Cooling Ultra-low flow watercooling

I recently stumbled across a manufacturer of reasonably priced subminiature fluid pumps, and it got me thinking about ultra-low-flow compact cooling loops for SFF. Current SFF systems are generally limited to either pump-on-block AIO coolers (OK for a single CPU, no good if you want to WC a CPU...
