Rant: Internal or External?

This is one of a series of mini-rants by your faithful correspondent, John Morrison. These are part of a series focusing on issues in the SFF niche. All content is entirely opinion of John, not of SmallFormFactor.net, and should not be taken as fact. Ahh, the age old SFF conundrum. Do I fit all of the power supply inside the case, or split the perceived volume up and have a power brick under my desk? Is that cheating? Do I include the brick in the final volume of my case? If I do, do I include the volume of my …

Enermax Revolution SFX 550W review

The SFX power supply market must be growing, because it seems like every few months now there are companies announcing new PSUs aimed at SFF enthusiasts. It was late last year that Enermax announced their Revolution SFX series, and today we’re now looking at the Revolution SFX 550W. While Enermax is no stranger to power supplies – and has even sold SFX units in the past – this is their first one aimed at the compact gaming rigs that have become significantly more prevalent nowadays. At a high level, the Revolution SFX 550W features fully modular cables, Gold-rated efficiency, all-Japanese capacitors, and is a 550W …

SilverStone SX550 Review

On the bench today is the SilverStone SX550, a 550W SFX power supply with Gold-rated efficiency, 80mm fan, and fully hard-wired cables. An interesting unit that slots in between the more budget units like the Bronze-rated ST30SF V2.0 and ST45SF V3.0 that I reviewed recently and the higher-end modular units in SilverStone’s ever-growing line of SFX and SFX-L PSUs. So without further ado, let’s take a look! A disclaimer first before we get started: SFF Network does not currently possess the expertise or equipment to fully test the electrical performance of PC power supplies, and as such, this article should not serve as the …

Should We Pick One Standard?

This is one of a series of mini-rants by your faithful correspondent, John Morrison. These are part of a series focusing on issues in the SFF niche. All content is entirely opinion of John, not of SmallFormFactor.net, and should not be taken as fact. There has been musings in our community of this form factor or that form factor being better than the others in all situations. M-ITX being preferable over M-STX. SFX is superior to TFX or Flex-ATX power supplies. DisplayPort being better to HDMI. With so much variety on our markets, should we work towards simplifying the SFF …

SilverStone ST30SF V2.0 and ST45SF V3.0 Review

Welcome to this special double feature PSU review! On the docket today are the SilverStone ST30SF V2.0 and the ST45SF V3.0, which are non-modular, Bronze-rated units with 92mm cooling fans of 300W and 450W capacity respectively. As the revision number at the end signifies, these are updated versions of previous SilverStone SFX power supplies and as such, they retain the old naming scheme. After reviewing high-end SFX-L monsters like the SilverStone SX700-LPT, Lian Li PE-750, and SilverStone SX800-LTI, it feels a bit strange to be reviewing more down to earth units like these, but realistically 300-450W would cover the vast majority …

SilverStone SX800-LTI now available on Newegg

Like it says on the tin, the SilverStone is now in stock at Newegg! Link here. Edit: It’s now on Amazon for the MSRP of $180. You can read my review for the details but in short, the SX800-LTI is a Titanium-rated (!), fully-modular, semi-fanless, 800W (!!), SFX-L power supply from SilverStone. I think it’s a great unit, with my main complaints being the fan starts a bit earlier and at a higher RPM than I’d like, and the fairly high price compared to the SilverStone SX700-LPT and Lian Li PE-750 alternatives. Unfortunately, Newegg has the 800W listed at an even …

HDPLEX CES Update

Larry from HDPLEX is in Vegas attending CES and Drew, our man on the ground covering the show, was able to catch up with him and get some updates on the upcoming AC-DC and DC-ATX units. For those unaware of the company, HDPLEX develops a line of fanless cases plus the cooling and power solutions to make them feasible, along with accessories like an ultra-flexible PCIe extender. The “NanoATX” power supply line consists of internal AC-DC adapters (that take AC in and output 19V DC) and DC-ATX units that take 16-24V DC input and convert it to the various voltages and connectors need …
