Samsung to release 4TB 850-series drives and 1TB 950 Pro this year

Sean Webster from The SSD Review is in Las Vegas for Storage Visions 2016 and had a moment to check in with Samsung on their plans for 2016. According to his report, Samsung plans to make use of their high-density 48-layer V-NAND to launch 4TB versions of both the 850 EVO and 850 Pro later this year, with the former expected by end of Q2 and the latter sometime Q3.

When Samsung announced the M.2 950 Pro last Fall they also announced that a 1TB model would be coming in early 2016. Unfortunately we don’t have a hard launch date yet, though it’s still on track for release later this year.

We’ll need to see price/GB come down more to make it truly viable, but it’s great that SSDs are starting to get to high enough storage density that it’s actually better to go solid state over hard drives for maximum storage capacity when limited to 2.5″ drives.
