AMD to Refrain From Using 12HVPWR Connector for RX 7000 Cards

With the impending clusterf*ck of the 12HVPWR connector situation on NVIDIA’s current generation cards, it’s good to hear that AMD will be refraining from using the aforementioned connector on the RX7000 series.

In a tweet from industry veteran Kyle Bennett, we have confirmation that neither AMD, nor their AIB partners, will use the connector.

Whether the choice regarding the connector was due to… unreliability.. in testing, or that Navi 31 (RX7000’s codename) isn’t looking to be as thirsty as the green team products, only time will tell.

After the @NVIDIAGeForce melting drama, I have verified through multiple sources that @Radeon Navi 31 ref cards will NOT use the 12VHPWR power adapter, and I could not verify any AIBs using 12VHPWR on N31 either. It is so funny to me that Intel, who was one of the bodies pushing this as a standard to ATX3, isn't even using this connector on their GPUs. And now AMD is leaving Nvidia to deal with this problem and let their users be the beta-testers.

I feel like the connectors will be fine once we start seeing direct connections from the PSU with less bulky wires, these 12vhwr to 4x8 pin cables are just ridiculous and feel impossible to work with to get any sort of wire management done, leaving people to bend them beyond what the cable can handle (which is a bad design, but i can't imagine many cables supporting 4x 8pins going into them and being well designed...).

Some company had to be the beta tester for getting these new connectors out.


Now.. when the hell are we going to get rid of that massive 24-pin Motherboard cable? With the GPU and CPU getting their own direct power, why the hell is the motherboard running off such a massive cable?

What I found especially interesting is that an nVidia engineer commented that they did actually test the connector rigorously with the manufacturer:

"all the issues have been fixed, we are very confident"

So either QA (nVidia and cable manufacturer) is not doing its job, they are shipping a different product that was tested (higher power draw or different cable assembly) or the driver is different than the ones used during testing.

I just don't understand how this can be rolled out to people. How can the LARGEST GPU manufacturer in the world screw something like this up this badly? Used to be AMD cards would heat a small house, now we have cables that are trying to burn that same house down. The engineering/QA behind this wreaks of last minute "oh shit we have to launch yesterday" energy.

'We're a near monopoly and they can deal with it' coupled with 'it'll be fine' and 'everyone will follow official guidance and never cost-cut'.

There seems to be cost cutting in these adapters. GN has found that some are built with wires rated for 150V and others are rated to 300V. Further between GN and Igor's Lab the connectors inside the plug are bridged differently. IOW, classic cut-corners-where-possible capitalism.
