Cooling Thermal Pad Replacement, Benefits?

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with thermal pad replacement. Specifically, I was reading Confusis' review of the ASRock’s Z390 Phantom Gaming-ITX/ac which identified some off-brand thermal pad.

In general, I was wondering if anyone had seen benefits of replacing, adding, or removing thermal pad in their builds?

For an M.2 drive? It matters about as much as RGB. It doesn't need to be there.
