Valve released the CAD files for the Steam Controller for all of us to play around with at about ~800MB for the main archive! They have also added a couple variants on the battery door for holding the wireless dongle when transporting it and the controller.

I am reasonably sure that Valve would prefer to not be in the hardware business, and would happily let market forces build a better mousetrap so they can focus on their *next* disruptive technology.

Many will argue that is their problem with the Steam Machine initiative in the first place. Unlike the Steam Controller and Steam Link, there are no set configurations for manufacturers to reach. Nor have they released the CAD files for the case for the Steam Machine Beta systems to help in that manner.

No need to release the files for the beta Steamboxes. What they did undoubtedly was inspired by or inspired Silverstone's RVZ01 (and follow-ons) and MSI's Vortex and Nightblade among others. Valve just needed to show it could be done and then get out of the way of OEMs, custom creators (KI, NCase, Dondan, etc.) and boutiques and let the market do the rest.

I will say that Valve could have helped the adoption of powerful SFF systems a bit by pushing the industry harder to adopt improved (more space-efficient, less costly) componentry and physical interfaces (a la Apple's Mac Pro and the MSI Vortex), but I think that these will come as the GPU power/performance ratio improves and the Red and Green teams introduce better interfaces (initially for HPC and supercomputing, likely). In any case, Valve did push the use of PCIe risers and SFF into - a not insignificant step.

Very good points there, especially about PCIe risers. I sincerely do hope that either MXM or another interface for GPUs become the norm. It would make some of the cases I'm trying to design, simpler.

Oh man did someone find files referencing HL3 in there yet? Seriously though that's cool be interesting to see what people print.
