SFF.Network More Pins Incoming – Intel’s Upcoming LGA1954 and Z990 Chipset Pictured

Purported to hit the market later this year, Intel’s incoming Nova Lake architecture has seen the first signs of life – photos of the socket and chipset. The socket was spied by X (Twitter) user @laurentschoice, and now features a pair of retention levers, much like Intel’s larger sockets in the HEDT and server space. While the socket sports a 5% increase in pin count, and appears to be more square than its’ predecessors, the socket will apparently continue cooler compatibility from the LGA1700 and LGA1851 socket series.

I’d argue that the T-series pretty much practically died out with the introduction of Alder Lake.

I can’t say I’m a fan of Intel’s constant chipset changes. That said, personally I’ve had a lot more AM4 board failures than Intel.

With the size of these sockets, we might start to see a return to form in the mATX SFF area. I’d love to see a new Maximus Gene board from ASUS. I still have a I5-2500K chugging along on one. Sliger Cerberus comes to mind…
